Why is it more important than ever to act
now to conserve energy as a nonprofit?
U.S. President Obama has made it your duty to recover the economy
You paid for it already by way of a hidden distribution charge in most cases
U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu has said energy conservation technology is “SEXY”
Grants are on a first come first serve basis
Government employees are obligated to energy waste reduction…by law
 The environment is suffering terribly
“Your carbon
emissions are
creating
carbonic acids
in the oceans
and
consequently
all the shell
fish and coral
reefs will be
dissolved by
the year 2100,
unless…”
according to
Stony Brook

Key issues facing Nonprofits?
 Insolvency
 Depreciating/decaying facilities and
equipment
 Fixed budgets

Key issues (Cont’d)
Half the power is lost getting to your facility
Buildings are responsible for over 70% of all electricity demand and over 50% of all natural gas demand in the US (Source JCI).
At least 25% of school district energy costs can be avoided through comprehensive energy conservation strategies (Source U.S. Department of Energy [DOE])
Most sensible thing to do before a renewable energy project (Source DOE)

Key issues (Cont’d)
 Useful work energy – 20%
Heat energy lost to cooling system – 36%
Heat energy lost through exhaust – 38%
Energy lost to friction – 6%
In a typical internal combustion engine, fossil
fuel is consumed/wasted as follows:

Next steps for Nonprofits
1. Let us survey your grounds. We will provide you with the necessary energy reduction quote and PON application.
2. Submit the PON with the reduction quote to NYSERDA to obtain the funding. We'll honor the deposit in either of these scenarios.
This next step requires some thought.
3. Go forward with project...a) Separately; or
b) Merge it in with any outstanding energy performance contracts.
The other primary contractors are willing to take on the project. We need to complete STEP 2 in order for me to give them the material and labor costs for option b.
4. Done for now.
