Motivation Theories
Instinct - simple biology
Drive - satisfying the craving
Incentive - What’s in it for me?
Psychoanalytic - choosing life or death
Instinct Theory
We are created and biological beings
We experience similar events
We react in certain, preset ways
We tend to be “self-preservationists”
The difference is that we can reason...
Instinct Theory
If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also.
If someone takes your cloak,do not stop him from taking your tunic.
– Luke 6:29 –

Hunger, Sex, Sleep, Acceptance
We strive to reduce tension these cause
We can overcome these with our )ee wi"
Drive Theory
Then Jesus returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and
pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
– Mark 14:37 –
Incentive Theory
We are used to this being used
If we do our chores, we get an a"owance
If we eat our vegetables, we get dessert
If we get in trouble, we get punished
If we do the job, we get paid a wage
Incentive Theory
Then Jesus returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and
pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
– Mark 14:37 –
Psychoanalytic Theory
Every decision becomes black and white
Do we do something for life it brings?
Every decision is about life and death
The Butterfly Effect amplifies this
Psychoanalytic Theory
For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work
in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us,we have been released from the law so that
we serve in the new way of the Spirit.– Romans 7:5,6 –
The bible invites us to bemore than just creaturesbut to join with Heavenin reflecting the divine
