Hello!My name is Emily Schulte and I am in my senior year of studying architecture at Clemson University. Through my trials and tribulations as an architecture student, I am proud to say that I have made it to senior year: the home stretch of my undergraduate career! This merits much admiration and respect from my peers as well as myself because we all know that accomplishing this is no easy feat. Despite my commitment to architecture, I have managed to hang onto a normal college life as much as possible. I am an officer and involved member of the National Championship Waterski Team at Clemson, I am a devoted to Christianity and engaged in my church. I am energetic, happy, a faithful friend and I love life.

Located in Beaufort, South Carolina, Corners is an up and coming small town area that offers a sense of community and entertainment for the locals. Tasked with creating a farmers’ market and a boardwalk that connects the community to the marsh nearby, we implemented vernacular architecture to increase a stronger sense of community. All elements of this project were required to be hand drawn.

Site Analysis

Preliminary Design Keeping with the vernacular architectural language of the surrounding area, especially since the Corners Community is such a small community was very important. I chose a simple, yet unique shape that falls into place with vernacular architecture and the grid system while reinforcing the axes. The hexagon is used as a motif throughout the whole project so that as a visitor is exploring the area, they know they are within the same system.

All of the structures in this project are open aired for both ventilation and circulation of users of the space. Each pavilion can be utilized for an individual purpose, maybe one sells fruits and vegetables while clothes are being sold in another and women are weaving baskets at yet another. The space is designed in such a way that trucks can also back up into the largest pavilion and sell off of tailgates. Because these pavilions are so open, they are very flexible, and can be used for other events as well such as community gatherings, weddings receptions, and daily use as escape from the heat.

Once I determined the location of the farmers’ market, bringing the high-density traffic into this new area was the next challenge. I looked at several axes of the existing site and drew a grid system that extended lines from the edges of buildings and looked at other attractions in the area.

The exploration of the “inside” block of the 22@ district yields a rhythm of various visual fields and filters. With particular modifications of these spaces, movement through the block, especially in regards to these visual fields may be enhanced. Incorporating the program of a multi-purposed space, day care, media library, and administrative offices, weaves the open and enclosed spaces together and creates flow and usages throughout the block by utilizing the visual fields as binding elements.

This diagram explores the different paths that can be traversed throughout the block when moving from one side to another.

This series of diagrams explores the placement of the program in different existing buildings according to necessity, such that the day care should be on the interior of the block for protection, the multi-purpose space has a large enough area to include a gym, and enough square footage for the other two programs.

We chose the optimal path through the block as the one that gives the user the easiest access to the interior of the block while connecting each of the buildings in which we have chosen to intervene. Every 5 meters, we sliced the block vertically to explore the condition of each moment along the path. Inclusive, was an analysis of where the view to the outside of the block was enhanced. We considered this to be important in the cohesion of our intervention within our site as well as

within the city surrounding.

I was responsible for all renderings, floor plans, site context image, and initial diagrams.

With the slices we took from the block, we arranged them as they stand in the block and subsequently created an optical map that became a guide for the remainder of our project. Analyzing each aspect of the program, we developed a general elevation shape for each building that satisfied the needs of the individual programs. We then used our optical map to look at the slices and insert our elevations into the slices where buildings were to be. Taking the initial shape of the elevations of each structure, we varied them slightly to create similar but slightly modified slices that a user experiences as he or she moves along the path.

After the massive damage caused by the earthquakes in Haiti, we were assigned to create a boarding school for elementary and middle school girls that would provide them a place to live and study after their displacement from their homes. We had to consider the tropical climate and implement structural stability that would ensure the safety and strength of the buildings and the children if another earthquake were to occur. Campus planning and safety of the students were the two main issues addressed with this project.

Bridging Finlay

Park to the Vista

In this rails-to-trails program, my group was charged with the task of creating a bridge for bikers and pedestrians that would span the four lane street below. This bridge is the connecting element between Finlay Park and the bike hub which eventually leads to the Vista in Columbia, South Carolina.

This project, designed for a gardener, was a study on moments and how three separate components can be united into one while simultaneously keeping their individual identities. Adding a door, window, and a staircase were project requirements that had to be integrated into the model in some way as well.
