Our alumni range from internationally renowned filmmakers like BruceDowadtoauthorslikeDougCoupland,todesignerslikeKellyDeck,tovisualartists like Brian Jungen and Terence Koh. One of our recent graduates,Mark Soo, was described by Art News in England as one of the top 30emergingartistsintheworld.WehaveaspecializedNewMediaresearchcentrerunbyDr.MariaLantinandabroadprogramofresearchthatincludeshealth design, 3-D image production and interactivity. Our Master’sstudentsspendfourmonthsworkingas internswith industrytofurtherstrengthentheirprospectswhentheygraduate.

In2010,weturn85yearsold.Wehavegrownfromasmallartschoolintoauniversitywith1,750full-timestudentsandmanythousandsofcontinuingstudiesstudents.Weareanurturingplace,devotedtosustainablepracticesineverythingthatwedoandmostimportantly,weencouragestudentstodevelop the independence of mind and spirit to explore their creativetalentandtoaimforthehigheststandards.

FOUNDATION

Foundation is a critical and demanding first-year program that orientsnewstudentstoEmilyCarrandpreparesthemforfutureyearsofstudyinart,mediaanddesign.

Theprimarygoalsaretoencourageinquiryandpromoteawillingnesstoengageincontemporaryartanddesignissues.

Contemporarypracticeworkswiththeinterrelationshipofconcepts,skills,andtheoriestoaddresssuchthemesassocialcontext,audienceandtherelationofformandcontent.

Practicingartistsanddesignerstakecreativerisks;theyexperimentwithideasandmaterials.InFoundation,studentswillexplorefineartanddesigninahighlystructuredlearningenvironmentinordertodevelopthedisciplinenecessaryforworkinginacreativeculturalpractice.

BACHELOR OF DESIGN

Inthisglobal,post-industrial,informationage,designhasevolvedintoahuman-centred practice with concern for real social needs. Our designprograms encourage students to be ‘Citizen Designers’, mindful of theconsequencesoftheirdesignactions.

Communication Design MajorCommunication Design focuses on creating innovative communicationmessagesandexperiencesthatinform,educateandentertain.Theprogramplacesemphasisonvisualresearchandaudiencecontextforapplicationssuchaspublicationdesign,interfacedesign,designformotionandexhibit

design. The program also embraces the historical, cultural, social andtechnologicaldevelopmentsinthefield.

Industrial Design MajorIndustrialDesignfocusesonmediatinghumanexperiencethroughthedesignofobjects,systems,technology,environments,productsandservices.Theprogramplacesparticularemphasisonsustainabledesign,user-centredmethodologyandstrategiesforcollaboration.

Interaction Design MajorInteraction Design fosters the integration and application of combinedskillsinindustrialdesignandcommunicationdesigntohelpshapethewayweinteractwithartifacts,informationandenvironmentsineverydaylife.Studentswilldevelopanunderstandingoftheskillsandknowledgerequiredtoaddressthecomplexityofinteractiondesigninbothphysicalanddigitalenvironmentsthroughasequenceofhands-onprojectsbasedonarangeof iterative human-centered modeling methods. Projects will cover therelationshipofthehumanbodytotheproductsweuse ineveryday life;screen-basedinteractionandcommunication;issuesofdesignandemotion;aswellasengagementininformationenvironments.

BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS

Animation Major Animationisanopenandflexibleprogramthatembracesdiversemedia.Students develop as creative animation designers and critical thinkers.Courseswithintheanimationprogramencompass2D,3Dandinteractiveanimation,integratingarangeofapproaches–fromdirecttodigital.Withinthe animation program, students can focus on a specialized stream ofcoursesthatbestsuittheirparticularinterests.

Critical + Cultural Practice MajorThe Critical + Cultural Practice major enables students to explore the

importance of art history, theory and criticism while they develop theirstudio practice. Academic classes (Art History, Design History, English,Humanities,MediaHistory,ScienceandSocialSciences)canmakeupmorethanhalfofthecurriculumwiththeremainderofcreditsinstudiocours-es. This interdisciplinary approach allows students to foster connectionsbetweentheoryandpractice,andtobringmodernandcontemporaryap-proachestothecreationofmaterialandtextualculture.

Film, Video + Integrated Media MajorFilm,Video+IntegratedMediaoffersastudio-basededucationthatexplorescontemporarypracticesinmediaarts.Theprogramoffersavibrantcom-bination of studio work, technical instruction, theory, critical analysis,historyandprofessionalpractices.Film,Video+IntegratedMediafocusesonindependent interdisciplinary learning processes and specialized technicalskill development within a model of collaboration, historical and criticalawarenessandcreativecontentdevelopment.

Photography MajorPhotographyoffersastrongemphasisonconceptual,technicalandhis-toricalknowledge,preparingstudentstobecomeinnovativephotographerswithincontemporaryculture.Curriculumcoversawiderangeofcameras,blackandwhiteandcolourprocesses,archivalprinting,digital imaging,installations,studioandprojectionlighting,projectedimagery,imageandtext,anddirectorialwork.

VISUAL ARTS MAJOR

Ceramics ConcentrationCurriculum integrates ceramic concepts and materials with sculpture,painting,drawing,printmedia,digitalapplications,designandarchitecture.Studentsexploreexpression,conceptualdevelopment,function,decorationand mixed media approaches within scientific, technological and socialcontexts,bothhistoricalandcontemporary.

Digital + Interactive Arts ConcentrationIntheDigitalandInteractiveArtsconcentrationstudentslearntoexpressideasthroughtheuseofdigitalapplicationsandproductiontoolsbyexploringthecurrentculturesurroundingtheproductionofdigitaland interactiveartandhowdigitalapplicationscanbeusedtoinformmoretraditionalartpractices.Studentsworkwithgraphics,web-authoring,animationvideoapplications,DVDandothernewmediatechnologiestoproduce2D,3D,interactiveandtime-basedwork.

Drawing ConcentrationDrawingstudentsdevelopanunderstandingofthetechnical,perceptualandconceptualaspectsofdrawingandparticipateintheexchangeofideasandsolutions.Curriculumcultivatesstudents’abilitiestodeveloptwo-dimensionallanguageandtechnicalvirtuosityinrelationtocontemporaryartpractices.

Illustration ConcentrationStudentsexamineillustrationgenres,includingbook,editorialandindustrialillustration, while working with a variety of methods and materials.Throughcriticalanalysis,studentsstudytherelationshipbetweenillustrationandpopularculture,examiningandshapingthevisualfabricofoureverydayexperiencesasevidenceofcontemporaryculture.

Painting ConcentrationThroughsubjectsrangingfromthepersonaltotheglobal,Paintingprovidesthestudentwithaframeworkforformalandmaterialexploration.Whethernarrativeorabstract,paintingallowsfordiversesolutionsthat,whileac-knowledgingitshistory,worktowardadvancingthedisciplineinnewways.

Print Media Concentration PrintMediafocusesonconceptsandprocessesthatshapeartisticexploration,andontherolesprintedimageandtextplayinsociety.Curriculumcoversawiderangeofprintmakingtechniques,includingwoodblock,engravingandetching,lithographyandscreen-printing.

Sculpture ConcentrationCurriculumemphasizes thedevelopmentof ideasandconcepts throughthestudyofthree-dimensionalformandspace.Techniques,materialsandmethods reflect the diversity of contemporary and traditional practices.Students are encouraged to explore sculptural approaches that includevideo,installation,electronicmediaandkinetics,aswellastheproductionofcastorconstructedobjects.

Fine Arts + Creative Writing Major ThisisajointdegreeofferedbyEmilyCarrandtheUniversityofNorthernBritishColumbia.EmilyCarrprovidesexpertiseandthedeliveryofthevisualart/studio curriculum and UNBC provides expertise and the delivery ofcreative writing, cultural studies and aboriginal art. This comprehensivedegreeinbothvisual/studioartandcreativewritingisuniqueinCanada.

General Fine Arts – External Degree EmilyCarr,incollaborationwithNorthIslandCollege,offersthethirdandfourthyearsofaBachelorofFineArts-GeneralFineArtsmajoratNorthIslandCollege.Theprogram isavailable tograduatesof theNorth IslandCollegeFineArtandDesignDiplomaProgram.Studentswillenteratthethird-year level and will be required to complete 60 credits to earn anEmilyCarrBFAdegree.

TheMasterofAppliedArtsdegreeprograms,boththefull-timeand lowresidency, focusonpromotingcritical reflectionand intellectual inquiry,andlinkart,designandmediatoprofessionalpractices.Studentscombineacademiclearning,researchandstudiopracticewithpracticalexperienceinavarietyofcreativeindustries.

The program blends rigorous individual and group critiques of studentprojectsandintegratesthestudyoftheorywithresearchandproduction.Studentshaveaccesstotraditionalandadvancedtechnologies.

StudentselecttoconcentratetheirstudiesinoneofthreestreamsDesign,MediaArtsorVisualArts.Interdisciplinarityisencouragedwithmanystudentsworkingcollaborativelyandacrossstreams.

ThenewLowResidencyMAAprogramcombinesonlineandindependentlearningwithannualsummer intensivesonourVancouvercampus;thisallowsstudentstostudyintheirhomecommunitiesfortheremainderoftheyear.

INTERSECTIONS DIGITAL STUDIOS

IntersectionsDigitalStudios(IDS)isEmilyCarr’sdedicatedresearchspace.Itiscomposedofthreethemedstudios:theMotionCaptureandVisualizationstudio,theWearablesandInteractiveProductsstudio,andthePrototyping+Media+Programmingstudio.

Thestudiosprovidefacultyandgraduatestudentsaccesstostate-of-the-art digital technologies to develop or enhance projects in all disciplines.These technologies were chosen to bridge digital and material practicesandpromotecollaborationsbetweendepartments.Examplesinclude,3Dscanners,a3Dprinter,aCNCmachine,astereoscopicprojectionsystem,anda20-cameraViconmotioncapturesystem.

AccesstoafacilitysuchasIDSallowsthefurthertrainingandeducationneededtocreateanewkindofartanddesignresearcher—onewhoseunderstanding of technology is informed by a strong sense of estheticsandethics.Inafieldthatmovessoquickly,andwheretoday’sinnovationsmay be obsolete, tomorrow’s students and researchers will gain morethanjusttechnicalskills.Theywillgainanunderstandingoftheunderlyingstructuresthatfuelthedynamismbetweentechnologyandcreativity.

TheCharlesH.ScottGalleryisanintegralaspectoftheeducationalexperienceatEmilyCarr.TheGalleryhasamandatetoexhibitcontemporaryartthatreflectstherangeofdisciplinescurrentlyexploredwithintheUniversity’scurriculumofstudies.AprimaryobjectiveofthegalleryisthepresentationofexhibitionsandpublicprogramsthateffectivelycommunicatetheroleofEmilyCarrUniversityofArtandDesignasanactivesitefortheexhibition,discussion,teachingandproductionofartanddesign.Aspartofitsmandate,theGalleryfunctionsasateachingspace,providingpracticalexperienceinmanyaspectsofexhibitiondevelopmentandpresentation.

Students are able to interact with the work of professional artists in aclose-upandhands-onmanner.Anumberofstudentsareemployedonapart-timebasistoassistwithgalleryoperationsandinstallations.

Aprogramofregional,nationalandinternationalexhibitionsiscarriedout,withanemphasisoncontemporarythematicgroupshowsthatcontainaneducationalorcriticalcomponent,andonsoloexhibitionsthatofferin-depthanalysisofanartist’sproduction.

AtGNW,eachorganizationiscommittedtobuildingauniqueandintegratedcentreofexcellenceinteaching,learning,researchandentrepreneurship.Collaborationisrecognizedasanessentialgoal,withoutduplicationofwhatisalreadyavailableonthecampusesofthefourpartnerinstitutions.

GNWisaccessiblebyfoot,regionaltransitandvehicle,andissituatedintheheartoftheSoutheastFalseCreekFlats,adistrictundergoingsignificanturbanrenewal.Theareawillbecomeaknowledge,social,andculturalhubby establishing a compelling and creative environment for regional andeconomicadvancement.
