Cook Islands DRM Progress 2010 - 12• Emergency Management Cook Islands (EMCI) and

Climate Change– Climate Change for Disaster Reduction merger with EMCI under

the Prime Minister Office.– A Joint National Action Plan for Disaster Response Management

& Climate Change.– Ongoing Development of a Joint National Policy & Legislation

for Disaster Management & Climate Change• Disaster Emergency Trust fund appropriation by

Cabinet approved in May 2011– Total of $NZ 264,000 for Enabling immediate response to

disasters. Expected 5 years interest at ($NZ42,048)– Amendment to the DRM Act is required for Budgetary purposes

and Parliament appropriate approval.– Generate new income streams and disaster response and

recovery

• Early Warning Siren installation for all Islands Completed– Fixed Sirens for Rarotonga fully automated.– Outer Islands fixed sirens remains on manual, yet to be

automated.

• Tsunami Evacuation Road Signs fully installed for all Islands

• Red Cross Emergency Management Shelter and Administration in full operation

• Pukapuka Island Cyclone Management Centre (CMC) Completed

• Manihiki Island CMC Upgrade completed• Ministry focal point and Community Disaster

Coordinators on-going training on SOPs
