Pastor’s Ponderings . . .
There is a subject on my mind that I hesitate to write about but as your pastor I can do no
other. If you are like me, you are getting weary of hearing the stories regarding the separation
of children from their parents. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum I would hope
that the injury of even one child would bother you. That is true whether that child is an
American citizen, or an alien living in this country, or a child in some other country. There are
continual stories coming from radio, television stations, newspapers, and other forms of public
media. It is difficult to tell what is true and what is false. It is a difficult subject and I refuse to
play some sort of blame game. What I will do is to support the ELCA and its writings and the
biblical reference. Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and other religious leaders have issued this
statement:
Recently, the Administration announced that it will begin separating families and criminally
prosecuting all people who enter the U.S. without previous authorization. As religious leaders representing diverse faith perspectives, united in our concern for the wellbeing of
vulnerable migrants who cross our borders fleeing from danger and threats to their lives, we are deeply disappointed and pained to hear this news.
We affirm the family as a foundational societal structure to support human community and
understand the household as an estate blessed by God. The security of the family provides critical mental, physical and emotional support to the development and wellbeing of
children. Our congregations and agencies serve many migrant families that have recently arrived in the United States. Leaving their communities is often the only option they have
to provide safety for their children and protect them from harm. Tearing children away from parents who have made a dangerous journey to provide a safe and sufficient life for them is unnecessarily cruel and detrimental to the well-being of parents and children.
As we continue to serve and love our neighbor, we pray for the children and families that will suffer due to this policy and urge the Administration to stop their policy of separating
families.
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs." We find this verse in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. My heart
aches for any child that is in some way harmed whether at home, at school, or by government practices. We pray for all children in God’s created order. Prayer is the very least we can do for
these children of God. For everything and everyone always belongs to God. Christ’s blessings
Pr. Katherine

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
June 4-8, 2018
VBS at “Maker Fun Factory: Created by God, Built for a Purpose” was a success! 45-50 children, ages 4-11,
participated in a week of fun and learning. Pastor Jeff Graber led the children in the opening session each day,
with songs, skits, and questions to introduce each day’s Bible point: DAY 1: God made you, DAY 2: God is for
you, DAY 3: God is always with you, DAY 4: God made you for a reason, and DAY 5: God will always love
you. Each time the Bible point was mentioned throughout the course of the morning, the children responded
with “Wow God!” All age groups were divided into 4 crews and rotated through four different stations to learn
more about the Bible point through Bible Discovery (led by Janet Manor), KidVid Cinema (led by Tammy
Feil), Snack Factory/Imagination Station (led by Janis Larson and Gayle Nelson), and Game Makers (led by
Kayley Fleming). The children spent the week sharing how God can be seen in everyday things (called God
sightings), even an enjoyable swim in the pool, or helping your sister or brother learn to play ball. They learned
that God will always be with them because He loves us unconditionally, and that He made all of us uniquely
complex and special. God is our #1 fan and will never leave us or forsake us. A HUGE thank you to Pastor
Jeff Graber for leading us every day and for the volunteers who helped throughout the week. God is good!
“Wow God!”
An additional thanks to Tammy Feil and Kelly French for organizing this year’s VBS.

END OF SCHOOL YEAR PARTY AND MOVIE ON THE LAWN
May 23, 2018
The Evangelism Committee hosted the End of School Year/Movie on the Lawn
party on May 23, the last day of school for area students. Everyone, young and
old, were welcome to attend. It was a great way to celebrate the end of school
for the summer, and to provide good food, fun and fellowship for members of
the community. The parking lot behind the church was used for yard games prior
to the start of the movie. Those attending were asked to bring a favorite snack,
yard games, and blankets or lawn chairs. The movie “Ferdinand” started at dark,
and the popcorn machine churned on throughout the movie. Thanks to the
Memorial Committee for purchasing the popcorn machine, as requested by the
Bruce Amos family.
The Evangelism Committee would like to hold more community-based events in
the near future. Contact Kelly French or the Evangelism Committee if you have
ideas to share.
The new popcorn machine was a big hit!
Kelly French and Jeremy Snapp kept it popping.
Lemonade, tea, water, and popcorn were provided. Everyone was
asked to bring their favorite snacks to share. Hot dogs left over from
the Senior Recognition BBQ were also available for all to enjoy.
