PHYSICAL FITNESS

PHYSICAL FITNESS

• More than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) and approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese.

• Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.

• In 2008, medical costs associated with obesity were estimated at $147 billion; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight. - Centers for Disease Control & Prevention

“Popular culture today often makes women look silly, inconsequential, mindless, and powerless. It objectifies them and disrespects them and then suggests that they are able to leave their mark on mankind only by seduction—easily the most pervasively dangerous message the adversary sends to women about themselves.”

-M. Russell Ballard, “Mothers and Daughters”, April 2010

• Happiness comes from accepting the bodies we have been given as divine gifts and enhancing our natural attributes, not from remaking our bodies after the image of the world. The Lord wants us to be made over—but in His image, not in the image of the world, by receiving His image in our countenances (see Alma 5:14, 19). - Susan Tanner, “The Sanctity of the Body,” October 2005

“Stephen Levine, a Buddhist teacher, says that hell is wanting to be somewhere different from where you are.” - Geneen Roth, Women, Food and God
