World War IEducation Programme

This day offers pupils a hands-on exploration of the war

at home and at the front line using real objects from the

period. Our home front workshop focuses on local stories

and key local figures who impacted on the war effort,

offering a local history study.

Curriculum Links

KS1• Events and life beyond living memory.• Significant historical events, people and

places in their own locality.

KS2• Extends pupils’ knowledge beyond 1066.

• Local history study.

Creative WorkshopDuring the afternoon the class will explore our WWI Gallery and then there is a choice of workshops - Zeppelin model making or creative writing.

Life on the Home FrontUsing a combination of role play drama and object handling, pupils will explore three key elements of life on the home front in Essex - the Zeppelin raids over Braintree district, women’s war work in local industries and the billeting of soldiers in Braintree.

Life in the TrenchesUsing clothing and equipment from British and German soldiers in the First World War, pupils will explore the differences between the uniforms and what life would have been like in the trenches.
