FISHERMANS WHARF PROPOSAL

The Issue
• Eden needs revitalisation to make it the
centre of tourism for the far south coast
of New South Wales
• Eden has the only natural harbour on
the NSW South Coast capable of taking
both small and large Vessels
• Eden’s population has declined from
4,000 to 3,000 due to a reduction of
fi shing licenses & lack of industry &
diversity
• Eden needs to be revitalised as a major
tourist destination by the creation of
safe all weather harbour for leisure and
small craft
• Government assistance is required
for environmental engineering studies
with community consultation to reverse
Eden’s decline and support for
this proposalNatural Coast Eden Wharf Woodchip Exporting

FISHERMANS WHARF PROPOSAL

Defi ciencies of the
Existing Environment
• parking on waterfront
• no activation of water front
• lack of tourist focus
• lack of tourist facilities
• lack of urban amenity
• lack of accomodation
• poor retailing
• little tourist interest
Poor Waterfront AccessAerial view of Eden Coast
FISHERMANS WHARF PROPOSAL
EDEN NSW MAY 2012
Proposal
• Build a new wave attenuator/barrier
to provide basis for safe recreation
harbour in Snug Cove not interfering
with commercial shipping or
professional usage
• establish a tourist retail complex
• establish a hotel on the waterfront
The Problem
• Snug Cove has a deserved
reputation among yachtsman and
boat owners as being unsafe for
small vessels
• Boats are frequently damaged or
detroyed in the Eden Port area in
southerly weather
• The NSW Government offi cially
classifi es Eden as ‘unsafe’ for
small vessels and advises that
boats should not be left at the
wharves unattended. NSW Maritime
website: www.eden.nsw.nsw.gov.au/
smallboats.html
• Of the hundreds of recreational boats
that pass Eden each year, most heed
this advice, if possible avoiding
the port
• Eden desperately needs new
economic growth as traditional
industries decline. A marina at Snug
Cove is our greatest and most
obvious opportunity to stimulate
growth, employment and provide
improved and safe maritime
ammenity.
Why Eden
• Eden is strategically placed as a
haven for all boats travelling between
NSW, Victoria and Tasmania.
• There is a strong demand for safe
moorings from boat owners in South
East NSW and the ACT
• Eden has all the community and
ancillary facilities except a safe all
weather berth
• A deep safe entrance is not available
elsewhere on the south coast
• Conveniantly located wharves, fuel,
slipway, repair facilities, launching
ramp already established
• Close to all town facilities
• Marine rescue, Customs, Water
police, NSW Maritime
• Airport within 20 minutes drive
• Magnifi cent ‘Wilderness Coast’
setting
