IntroductionIntroduction

• The proposal of IPUMS is to start with the• The proposal of IPUMS is to start with themost recent avalaible census year (2001), tocreate geographic units of 20K populationcreate geographic units of 20K population. Those units are called IGUS IntegratedGeographic Units SeriesGeographic Units Series.

• We separate the procces in two parts:1. Scattered or rural area2. Urban area

Basic ProcessBasic Process

• Step 1: Identification of Sectors with highestStep 1: Identification of Sectors with highestnumber of people *seeds*

• Step 2: Define adjacent Sectors within GISStep 2: Define adjacent Sectors within GIS• Step 3: Merge to the seed with an adjacent  sector with smaller population to create a newsector with smaller population to create a new larger sector.

• Repeat the process until the new sectorRepeat the process until the new sector achieve a total population of less than 20,000 inhabitants.

1. Scattered area(Rural area)1. Scattered area(Rural area)

• For the scattered area we first used theFor the scattered area we first used the political and administrative division at the parish, ie the lowest geographical level  were  parishes. We made the corresponding exercise with census zones and census sectors  without bi ib i fa big contribution so we prefer to use

parishes. W h h IGUS f h d l• We show  the IGUS for the scattered or rural area.

2. Urban area2. Urban area

• For the urban area or block area due to theirFor the urban area or block area,  due to their geographical density it was not possible to use parishes so it was used census sectors as unitsparishes so it was used census sectors as units of the lowest geographical level.

• We show the result of IGUS for the urban area• We show the result of IGUS for the urban area of principal cities from Ecuador.

ConclusionConclusion• For rural areas, despite the existence of lower geographic

levels (census zones and census sectors) was enough to use parishes to use the DPA. But when building IGUS not necessarily all the parishes belong to the same canton.

The use of parishes as lower geographical units affects  when creating new parishes because it should mend IGUS according to these creationsaccording to these creations.

For the urban areas,  census sectors were used due to its high population density, and in the case of the way ofhigh population density, and in the case of  the way of construction, not necessarily all of the IGUS census sectors, belongs to the same census zone.
