Don’t rush it. Body-builders don’t train in a day – neither does a child.

And most important ofall, HAVE FUN!

Read the book WITH your child. You read the “regular” text, and he/she reads the big, red words, sort of like reading the different parts in a play.

Help your child sound out the words as needed.

Read the book several times. This helps develop the eye muscles and left-to-right reading patterns.

“Hello, cat, you are blooking well... but what bon Earth is that terrible bsmell?” b

19

“Have you thought, perhaps, babout washing your feet bor getting a toothbrush and bbrushing your teeth?” b

20

The cat sniffed the bair with its rubbery nose. bThen the cat bent over bto sniff its toes. b

21

“Mr. Mouse, I smell FINE, bjust like a cat should. bIn fact, I would say that bI smell rather good.” b

22

“But you two mice smell blike dinner to me... And bnow I shall eat if you bboth agree?” b

23

“Wait!” said . mac“Before you begin, bthere’s something bdangling on your chin.” b

band he knew it was wrong...35

...he said, “Look up a blittle... now look to the bside. Did you know that byour nose is super-sized?” b“Super-sized” is American slang for really big. 36

“What?” said the cat. b“You have to be joking!”b

37

“No,” said , “but macI really was hoping that bmaybe, just maybe, we bcould be friends... b

38

...not as cat and bmouse, but as two bmen...”b

39

“Look,” hissed the bcat, “at the name bon my collar...” b

40

“...Abigail Mimzy bGeraldine Follar...” b

41

“I am NOT a , manI am a girl, and you bare the stupidest mouse bin the world!” b

42

mac sat down

and covered his face. bHow could he make bsuch a big mistake? b

43

How? Easy! The cat bwas covered in mud and bdirt. How could he know bthat he was a her? b

44

mac took a mirror

from his pocket, where bhe also kept a pen and ba bar of chocolate. b

45

“I am so, so sorry. b I only want to help. b Please...take the mirror band look at yourself.” b

48

Then his sister said, b“I’ll get the bath.” b
