INAUGURATION OF IE(I) STUDENT’S CHAPTER
The inaugural function of The Institution of Engineers (India) students’ chapter of Easwari
engineering college , initiated by the Department of Civil Engineering for the academic year 2016 – 2017
was held on 4th August 2016 (Thursday). Er. K.P. Ramanathan, Former Chief Mechanical Engineer,
Chennai Port Trust, Chairman of The Institution of Engineers(India) presided over as the chief guest and
Er.R.Radhakrishnan , Secretary General of the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) was the Guest of Honour for
the day. The event began with welcome address given by Dr.S.LavanyaPrabha , the Head of Department.
She shared her thoughts on the active participation of the members of the professional societies. She also

appreciated the staff and students for their accomplishments. Following her Mr. Kathiravan , the principal
of the institution addressed the gathering and he spoke about how important it is for students to improve
their skills rather than focusing only on theoretical knowledge.
After the newly elected President of IE students’ chapter, Mr.R. Bharanidharan was introduced
his team of office bearers for the academic year 2016 – 2017. Then Dr.Antony Michael raj, Vice principal
felicitates. Following this the Chief guest of the event Er. K.P. Ramanathan shared his thoughts on how
attitude is most fundamental quality required to achieve success and Er.R. Radhakrishnan , the guest of
honour for the day spoke a few words about the efficient functioning of such student’s chapters. Finally
the vote of thanks was presented by Mrs.L.Chandrakanthamma, IE Advisor, Assistant professor,
Department of Civil Engineering.

ACE TECH FEST ’16 – MARVELS – A NATIONAL
LEVEL TECHNICAL SYMPOSIUM
ACE TECH FEST – The National Level students’ technical symposium was conducted on
12/08/2016 (Friday). The symposium witnessed over 600 registrations this year with students from

several colleges participating in various events. The symposium was supported by the College
Management and around 22 sponsors. The Inaugural function started at 9:15 am traditionally with an
invocation song followed by lighting of the Kuthuvilakku. Bhishma R. Radhakrishnan, All India Past
President & Trustee of BAI graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Sri.M u M o a h a n All India Vice
President of BAI was the Guest of Honor. The importance of Ancient construction methods and their
incorporation in today’s technology was stressed by the guests during his inaugural address. It was an
inspiring and motivating speech to the budding Civil engineers. Director General also addressed the
student and emphasized the beauty of Ancient architecture and its uniqueness. Principal emphasized that
the student has to come out with innovative technology to solve day to day problems in Civil engineering.
Vice Principal emphasized that the student has to gain practical knowledge by being aware of Modern
construction technology and effective participation in various events. The dignitaries released the souvenir
‘MARVELS’ during the Symposium. The Inauguration was followed by various events for showcasing
the talents of students. The Highlights are:
1. TRAIL BLAZZERS (Paper presentation) – Major topics discussed in this event were structural,
Environmental, Sustainability, Transportation and GIS applications. Around 70 papers were presented
in 3 Sessions. In each session 3 contestants were selected as winner and cash price was rewarded. The
event was judged by experts in various fields of Civil engineering.
2. BILL BOARD (Poster presentation) – This event witnessed student’s innovation in the form of
posters focusing on smart materials, smart structures, construction automation and innovation in
construction. The top 3 prize winners among the 10 teams who competed in the events were picked by
experts who judged the event and cash price was rewarded to all the 3 winners.
3. CLASH OF CADD (CADD contest) – Out of 60 teams who participated in the preliminary round of
selection, 14 teams competed in the final round. Students who exhibited the best residential layout for
the given land area and built up area were judged as winners.
4. TOWER IT (Model making) – 40 teams participated in the prelims. 15 shortlisted teams in the first
round projected a tower using balsa strips. Prizes to the winners were based on accuracy of
dimensions, weight and appearance of the model.
5. MINUTE TO WIN IT (60seconds event) – 57 teams took part in the event. There were 4 tasks for
each team to complete. Top 2 teams who completed the entire four tasks with the minimum time
duration were announced as winners.

6. TRIAL BY CONCRETE (Concrete Challenge) – The teams were asked to make a Light weight
concrete Cube of given density and the top 3 teams out of the 11 teams with maximum load carrying
capacity and the type of material used were judged and rewarded with cash prize and certificates.
7. BRAIN BUZZERS (Technical Quiz)– 10 Teams were shortlisted for quizzing out of the total 65
Teams who took part in the prelims. The participants were subjected to a number of questions related
to Civil Engineering out of which top 3 teams were declared as winners.
Apart from the above formal events, informal events such as ADZAP, Treasure Hunt,
Connexions, Box Cricket, Shipwreck, Gaming and Eat-O-Mania were conducted. Photography was
conducted as an online event. The valedictory program started at 4:00 pm. The top performers in
various events were awarded Cash prizes/ Certificates by the Department of Civil Engineering and
ACE. Participation certificates were issued to all contestants. The symposium ended with the vote of
thanks followed by the National Anthem.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT – tNHB PROJECT
We the students of B.E., CIVIL ENGINEERING from Easwari Engineering college went for an
industrial Visit to TNHB PROJECT, on 18.03.2016 & 19.03.2016 located at ECR Link Road,
Sozhinganallur, Chennai under the supervision of Mr.Anand, Mr.Paramaguru, Mrs.Kalingarani,
Ms.Anandhi, Assistant Professors, Civil Dept – EEC.
On that day, we went to Construction Site and listen key points about safety measures should be
followed inside Construction Zone. There by we listen to history about TamilNadu Housing Board and
The students got the real picture of Precast Work going in your Construction Site.
Some of Feedback from Students are got idea about the precasting mould, curing, transportation
of structural elements and know about practical draw backs in construction site and how to rectify and
overcome that. So, we are very much thankful to you for a great opportunity to visit the site. We are
thankful to Mr.Mani. A.E for guiding and clear explaination about various methodology adopted in that
site.

GUEST LECTURE – OPPORTUNITIES TO CIVIL
ENGINEERS
The Department of Civil Engineering of Easwari Engineering College organized a Guest lecture on
23rd August, 2015 for the First year UG Students. The lecture on “Opportunities for Civil Engineers” was
delivered by Mr.B.Sabari Vasan, General Manager, Marutham Groups of Construction, Chennai. He was
welcomed by Dr.S.Lavanya Prabha, Head of the Department, Easwari Engineering College presented the
introduction about the guest.
The one hour session from 08.00am to 9.00am was absolutely informative to the students. The
Speaker started the session with presentation on Basic technical details in Civil Engineering.
The brief explanation on Basic materials used for Construction and the foundation design. Also
explained about the Quality control and Assurance, Handing over and Test reports. This speech was very
useful to the first year students and learned all the basic techniques and execution details clearly. Also
know about the wastage material and main thing first to protect our natural material.

GUEST LECTURE – OPPORTUNITIES OVERSEAS IN
CIVIL ENGINEERING
The Department of Civil Engineering of Easwari Engineering College organized a Guest lecture on
29th August, 2016 for the Third year UG Students. The lecture on “Opportunities Overseas in civil
engineering.” was delivered by Ms.Kalaivani, Student Advisor, Manya Education Pvt Ltd, T-Nagar,
Chennai. The one hour session from 2.30pm to 3.30pm was absolutely informative to the pre-final year
students.
The Speaker explained in brief about the various procedures and criterions to get into any of those
professional institutions abroad. She threw light even on the areas of how to choose colleges, when to
enroll, hot to enroll, etc. She also mentioned how we need to categories our choices and choose wisely.
She also briefly gave us an outlook on the components of our application to colleges.
She mentioned the smaller details of paper presentation and other extracurricular activities. It was
a very thought provoking lecture that definitely helped students to decide their future steps. Queries of
students were well answered. The session came to an end with the delivery of vote of thanks from
Ms.Nayana Sree Kumar, third year student.

GUEST LECTURE – MOTIVATIONAL LECTURE TO
TOP 10 STUDENTS
The IE(I) and ICI Students Chapter of Civil Engineering organized a lecture to
motivate students. The chief guest, Mr. Desikamani Gopaladesikan, consultant and professor, Great
Lakes Institute of Management-Chennai was welcomed by the Head of Department, Dr. Lavanya
Prabha and was addressed by the Vice President, Mr. Gopi Krishnan of Institution of Engineers
(Students Chapter).
The students were asked to sit in a circle by the guest so as to get the most
interactive session. Then he recollected many personal stories which were very inspiring. He
talked about his experiments “The hole in the wall” and many other exploits of his close friend.
He also spoke about ‘SOLE’ – Self Organized Learning Environment, were he gave his views on
how a great environment will provide great education. He discussed the true meaning of
metallurgy with a simple to understand concept. Then he went on to motivate the students by
speaking about the true meaning of Excellence and Mediocrity. At last, the session ended with a
questionnaire, where the students cleared their doubts and questions. The vote of thanks was
given by the HOD along with a memento presented by the Students.

Indestructible bridges could be reality, thanks to nature-inspired 'form-
finding'
A new generation of indestructible bridges
A new generation of indestructible bridges could be possible, thanks to new research. An engineer
has taken a design process called 'form-finding', inspired by the natural world, into another level. This
could, for the first time, lead to the design of bridges and buildings that can take any combination of
permanent loading without generating complex stresses. Such structures will have enhanced safety, and
long durability, without the need for repair or restructuring.
Emeritus Professor Wanda Lewis in the School of Engineering has taken a design process called
'form-finding', inspired by the natural world, to another level. Form-finding enables the design of rigid
structures that follow a strong natural form -- structures that are sustained by a force of pure compression
or tension, with no bending stresses, which are the main points of weakness in other structures. This could,
for the first time, lead to the design of bridges and buildings that can take any combination of permanent
loading without generating complex stresses. Such structures will have enhanced safety, and long
durability, without the need for repair or restructuring.
For 25 years Professor Lewis has been studying forms and shapes in nature: the outlines of a tree
or a leaf, the curve of a shell, the way a film of soap can suspend itself between chosen boundaries. In all

of these natural objects, Professor Lewis observed that they develop simple stress patterns, which help
them to withstand forces applied to them (such as wind hitting a tree) with ease.
Professor Lewis has been developing mathematical models that implement nature's design
principles and produce simple stress patterns in structures. The principles behind her mathematical models
are illustrated using physical form-finding experiments involving pieces of fabric or chains, for example.
A piece of fabric is suspended, and allowed to relax into its natural, gravitational, minimum energy shape;
then that shape is frozen into a rigid object and inverted. She finds the coordinates of this shape through
computation by simulating the gravitational forces applied to the structure. This produces a shape (a
natural form) that can withstand the load with ease.
Professor Lewis argues that "nature's design principles cannot be matched by conventional
engineering design." While classical architectural designs are appealing to the eye, they aren't necessarily
structurally sound: "aesthetics is an important aspect of any design, and we have been programmed to
view some shapes, such as circular arches or spherical domes as aesthetic. We often build them regardless
of the fact that they generate complex stresses, and are, therefore, structurally inefficient," says Professor
Lewis.
The question of how to build the optimal arch has been argued through history. In the seventeenth
century, Robert Hook demonstrated to the Royal Society that the ideal shape of a bridge arch is that
resembling the line of an upside down chain line -- the catenary form. The only other form proposed by
classical theory is the inverted parabola. Each of these shapes can only take a specific type of load without
developing complex stresses, which are points of weakness. Professor Lewis' pioneering 'form-finding'
process fills the gap in classical theory, offering a new mathematical solution in the pursuit of the optimal
arch subjected to general loading.
