ROUND CITYRe-visiing Frank Lloyd Right’s vision of Baghdad cultural city.

08

Located on the Tigris river the same location that Frank Lloyd Wright chose for his proposed opera house project back in the 1950s. The cultural center incorporated cues of Baghdad’s history, which made the center a museum of a journey in time through all of Baghdad’s history. I incorporated architectural layers using different time frames of Baghdad’s layout, for example the foundational layer being the round city, the second being Baghdad in the 1800s and so on. The common Layer is the tigras as the constant witness of what Baghdad has witnessed.

Site Plan of the cultural citynorth east of baghdad famouse islan surrounded by the Tigris river from three sides

Layers of city fabric at different eras start to merge and collide creating labyrinthine geometry that represents the true complexity of Baghdad’s culture. The main goal is to create a museum of experience as the buildings are sculpted to create different scenarios and physical environment reflecting the stories of the events that Baghdad went through.

15

Circulation plays a profound rule in shaping the experience therefore it occupies a significant rule both in the physicality and methodology of the architecture. The layer of the Tigris River is converted into the main circulation rout that takes the users into a journey across the building complex giving the fact that the river is the oldest the life witness to what Baghdad went through from its golden ages to the dark ages of Hulagu invasion.

he site is located in downtown Amman, to the Abdali Commercial Center, and can clearly be viewed from the mountain across, the site is situated in a steeply sloped hillside and bounded by two major highways which creates a big challenge. The site currently function as an informal parking space occupied by transfer vehicles that will eventually be relocated outside the city center.Amman Municipality’s objective is, converting the empty parking space in to a commercial area where it can be pedestrian friendly and strengthen the connection between the main civic points between the west and Amman old city center on the east. The design intended to create multiple pedestrian nodes that can be accessed from different levels to emphasize on the unique urban topography of Amman. The project will also try to reflect Amman’s image and its Downtown’s character through contemporary it’s design elements along with consideration to the public

realm, where the building would act as a public hub. Another main objective considered in the design is the relationship between the valley and the hill by creating a functional between different levels within the site where streets can be more engaging and attractive for locals and even tourists to the area, as the site is located in the center of major touristic sites in the Downtown, and the surrounding hills.Elevating the public space above the main streets will also complement Amman’s unique topography and the density of its hills, which create an important base for an urban visual experience, and also the urban balconies, which have served as an interesting connection between the public and the private life of it’s local residents.

REGENERATINGDabuke to the urban organism

32

“In biology, regeneration is the process of renewal, restoration, and growth that makes organisms and ecosystems resilient to natural fluctuations or events that cause disturbance or damage”. This can also be related to sites and spaces, a site works as a micro cell that connects to a larger organism that is the urban context. The site is located in a once fertile land occupied with lushes green canopies, unfortunately due to neglect and poor water conditions the soil began to denigrate and ultimately uprooted the trees from the land. If we look at the after the loss of the trees it is but a void a dead cell that is acts negatively in the urban surrounding. The idea of the hospital design focused on the ecological and physical regeneration and healing of the site to into living microorganisms that will ultimately to larger urban system.

Perspective of the hospital

Showing the two main wings healing and recovery , each of the two grids represent a stage in the healing process of the cell regeneration process. the grid also preform a multaple systems of structural support, oxygyn pipe line and drainage system.

41

Taking advantage of the grid in lighting as well through over the hospital corddors the angle of the grid is coordenated with the sund light to provide perfect natural light into the building.

AMMAN NATIONAL LIBRARYThe house of Amman cultural heritage

44

The requirement of the project is to represent Amman treasury and cultural heritage through strong characteristic elements that can be recognized by various generations and social levels, the same people who represent the city heritage. The composition of the site proceeded from the old Ammani house with consideration to the effects of views and site contexts. The program of the site is also divided in seven major functions influenced by the fact that Amman is consisted of seven hills, all major programs will be connected visually and physically to a main center area where it connect different levels creating multiple views for the people walking and sitting in the area.
