ENROLMENT PROCEDURE  KINDERGARTENENROLMENTChildrenwhoturnfiveyearsofageby31stJulyoftheyeartheystartKindergartenareeligibletoenrolatourschool.Toregisteryourchild,youmustgototheschooloffice,whereyourdetailswillberecorded.Youwillbegivenan“ApplicationforEnrolment”form,whichmustbecompletedandreturnedtotheoffice.Theapplicationformwillonlybeacceptedatschoolwhenitisaccompaniedby:•ProofofAge(egOriginalBirthCertificate);•Immunisationhistory;and•ProofofAddressNON‐LOCALENROLMENTS1.Parentsmayseektoenroltheirchildintheschooloftheirchoice.2.Childrenareentitledtobeenrolledinthegovernmentschoolthatisdesignatedfortheintakeareawhichthechild’shomeissituatedandthatthechildiseligibletoattend.3.Nochildwillbediscriminatedagainstforenrolmentonthegroundsoftheirsex,age,race,religion,ethnicity,disabilityorsexualpreference.TRANSFERSTOANOTHERSCHOOLParentsshouldnotifytheschoolinadvanceeitherpersonallyorbyletterifachildwillbeleavingtheschool.Theintendednewaddressandschoolshouldbeavailableifpossible.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE  Allchildrenarerequiredbylawtoattendschoolfromtheageof6years.Somechildrenattendschoolbelowtheageof6years.Onceachildisenrolled,itisexpectedthathe/shewillattendschooleveryday.Fromthefirstday,regularattendanceisimportant.Friendshipgroupsareformedandplayactivitiesteachsocialskillsthatareveryimportantforlaterlearning.TheDepartmentofEducationacceptsfewreasonsforabsence.Ingeneraltheyare:

•Thechildistoosicktoleavethehouse•Thechildhasaninfectiousdisease•Thechildisincapacitatedbyinjuryandunabletomovearoundtheschool•ReligiouscommitmentorannualfamilyholidaybyarrangementwiththePrincipal•Emergencydentalordoctorappointments(althoughafterschoolispreferred)

Ifyourchildisabsentfromschool,youneedto:

SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY  Allstudentsareexpectedtowearfullschooluniformatalltimes.ThewearingoftheschooluniformatDuriPublicSchoolisseenasavaluableagentinthedevelopmentofthechildasatotal,contributingmemberofaspecialsocialgroup–theschoolfamily.Exceptionstothewearingoftheuniformwouldberareanditwouldonlybeonthoseoccasionswhereitwouldbeimpracticalbecauseofthetypeofeducationalexperiencebeingundertakenatthetime.

CURRICULUM: KEY LEARNING AREAS  TheBoardofStudiessetsthesyllabusstandardsthatallNSWschoolsmustfollow.TherearesyllabusdocumentsinsixKeyLearningAreasthatprimaryschoolsaremandatedtoteach.Allsyllabusdocumentsareorganisedintoaframeworkoflearningoutcomesandindicatorswithinthefourdevelopmentalstages:EarlyStage1(Kindergarten),Stage1(Years1and2),Stage2(Years3and4)andStage3(Years5and6).ThesixKeyLearningAreas(KLAs)are:EnglishMathsHumanSocietyanditsEnvironment(HSIE)ScienceandTechnologyCreativeandPracticalArtsPersonalDevelopment/Health/PhysicalEducation(PD/H/PE)

COMPUTERS  DuriPublicSchool issuppliedbytheStateGovernmentwithhardwareandanetworkinfrastructure.AllcomputersareWindowsbasedandarelocatedinalabenvironmentbetweenthe twoclassrooms.There isamixofdesktopsand laptopsalongwithsomeIpads.Allclassrooms,includingthelibrary,haveinteractivedisplaypanelsaswellasawirelessnetworkacrosstheschoolbuildings.Computersareused inall areasofworkand includeaccess toWorldBookon lineaswell as programs and sites used to supplement and extend teaching and learningactivities.Theseareeasilyaccessedfromhomeafterlocatingtheschool’swebsite.Linksarearrangedforchildren,staffandcommunitytoaccess.Anyhand‐helddevicessuchastabletsandphoneswillneedapprovalfromtheprincipalbeforebeingbroughttoschool.

CHILD PROTECTION PROGRAM  Childprotectionisasensitiveandchallengingareaforschoolcommunities.Becausechildrenandyoungpeoplearerelativelypowerlessinabusiverelationships,theyrelyuponresponsibleadultstointerveneandassistthem.TheNSWDepartmentofEducation(DoE),asanagencyresponsibleforthecareandwelfareofstudents,hasachartertoprotectyoungpeopleinitscarefromsexual,physicalandemotionalabuseandneglect,andfromimproperconductofasexualnature.Theschoolisboundbylegislation,toreportanysuspectedabuseorneglectofchildrenincaseswheretheschoolhasreasonablegroundsforsuchsuspicions.Throughitsschools,itistheroleoftheDepartmentofEducationto:

•provideeducationalprogramsinchildprotection•protectstudentsfromabuseandneglectandassistintherecognitionofsuspectedchildabuseandneglect•provideon‐goingsupportforstudentswithinthenormaldutiesofschoolstaff

Childprotectioneducationaimstoassiststudentstodevelopskillsin:

•recognisingandrespondingtounsafesituations•seekingassistanceeffectively•establishingandmaintainingnon‐coerciverelationshipsandstrengtheningattitudesandvaluesrelatedtoequality,respectandresponsibility

Throughchildprotectioneducation,childrenwilllearn:

HOMEWORK  Homeworkisanimportantpartofyourchild’seducation.TheobjectivesofthehomeworkpolicyStudentswill:

Takeresponsibilityforhis/herhomework Developefficientandindependentworkhabits

Homeworkshouldgenerallybeacontinuationoftheclassroom,notanisolatedactivity.Individualteacherswillmakestudentsandparentsawareofhomeworkprocedureseachyear.Parentsareencouragedtomonitorhomeworkandsignatregularintervals.K/1/2Virtuallyalleverydayactivitiesathomeandinplayprovideopportunitiesforparentstohelpyoungchildrendevelopnumeracy,problemsolvingabilities,andawiderangeofotherknowledgeandskills.Intheirearlyyears,childrenmaybeinvolvedinsuchregularhomeworkactivitiesashomereadingschemes,libraryborrowingandlanguageactivities.Years3‐6Activitiesmayincludecompletionofwork,additionalformalbookworkandtasks,reading,researchobservationanddatacollection,designingandmaking,andpractising,aswellascompletionofweeklyhomeworkcontracts.

PARENTS & CITIZENS ASSOCIATION (P&C)  Parentsareencouragedtoparticipateinarangeofschoolactivities.OnewaytoparticipateistosupportP&Cactivitiesandregularlyattendmeetings.TheschoolhasanactiveParentsandCitizensAssociationthatsupportstheschoolinawiderangeofactivities.TheP&Cworkstoraisemoneyfortheschoolforthedirectpurchaseofequipmentforclassroomsandimprovementtoschoolgrounds,aswellasfinanciallysubsidisingschoolexcursionsandactivities.OurparentbodymeetsattheschoolonthesecondWednesdayofeachmonthat7pmduringschooltermsandprovidesaforumforparentdiscussion.Newmembersarealwayswelcome.

REPORTING TO PARENTS  Bothformalandinformalreportingisusedtoreporttoparentsontheirchildren’sprogress.Theschoolusesschool‐basedandexternalNationalTests(Years3&5)toassessandreportonprogress.Opportunitiesaremadeforaparent/teachernightearlyintheyeartoexplainclassroutinesandprocedures.Thismeetingcanbefollowedwithanindividualparent/teacherinterviewifrequested.Writtenreportsarepreparedforallstudentsmid‐yearandyearly.Parentsconcernedaboutanymattersrelatedtotheirchild’sprogressatschoolshouldapproachtheclassteacherand/orPrincipaltoarrangeaninterview.

 VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTION SCHEME  Fundsprovidedfromgovernmentsourcesarenotsufficienttomeettheclassroomnecessitiesofbooks,contributionstolibraryandotherteachingresources.Withoutfundraisingfromparentstherewouldbelesslibrarybooks,fewercomputersandtechnologicalequipment,lessplaygroundandsportingequipment,andlessreadingandmathematicsequipment.AtDuriPublicSchool,wehaveaVoluntaryContributionFund(TextbookFund)wherebyallparentspay$50perenrolledstudenttocoversuchthingsas:

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTION SCHEME  WealsohaveaVoluntaryExcursionFund,whichisaseparatefund,of$50perenrolledstudent.Thispaymentavoidstheproblemsassociatedwithfrequentcollectionofsmallamountsofmoneyfromchildrenforspecialeventsandminorexcursions.Thiswouldnotincludeanymajorexcursionsorintensiveswimmingprograms,howeveritismorefinanciallybeneficialfortheparenttopaytheVoluntaryExcursionFund,ratherthanpayingforactivitiesastheyarisethroughouttheyear.

EXCURSIONS  Educationalexcursionsorperformancesareplannedasexperiencestosupplementandextendclassandschoolprograms.Ourexcursionsareplannedforthewholeschool,classesorstagegroups.If,forsomeparticularreason,aparentdoesnotwishhis/herchildtoparticipateinanyexcursion,visitorperformance,thisinformationcanbeconveyedtothePrincipal.Itisrealisedthat,attimes,thecostfactorofexcursionscancausesomedifficulty.However,ouraimisthatallstudentsparticipateinwhatisoftenanintegralpartofthelearningprocess.PleasecontactthePrincipalifthereisafinancialconcernsothatarrangementscanbemadeforpartpaymentordeferralofpayment.Apermissionnotesignedbyaparentorguardianwillbeobtainedandisnecessaryforallotherexcursionsandactivities.Theschool(throughthePrincipal)reservestherighttoexcludeastudentfromanyexcursion,visitoranyactivityifthereisconsideredtobesomesafetyorbehaviourproblemwhichcouldcreatedifficulties.Parentswillalwaysbeinvolvedinthisdecision.Seniorclass3‐yearrotation: Juniorclasshaveanannualday
