DRUGSLearning Objectives:

1.Know which drugs athletes take to enhance performance

2.Understand the effects of drugs on the body

3.Understand the effects of drugs on sporting performance

Anabolic AgentsMost commonly used in sport

• Inject into blood stream

• Build up muscles – allow you to train longer

BUT

• Cause high blood pressure,

heart disease,

Infertility,

Cancer,

Body and facial hair,

Deeper voice. Example: testosterone

Second most commonly used

• Make reaction time quicker• Increase aggression – feel less pain• Work for longer without getting fatigued

ADDICTIVE!

• Athletes can train too hard – cause injury high blood pressure heart and liver problems

Example: Cocaine, Caffeine

StimulantsSo what

sports would benefit from

them?

• Similar effects to steroids – muscle building

• Strokes• Abnormal Growth

Example: EPO (Substance that copies natural hormones of the body)

Peptide Hormones

• Synthetic hormone – copies natural hormones of body• Increases red blood cell count• Stimulates bone marrow to produce more red blood cells,

improving oxygen uptake

BUT - Can lead to stroke heart attack by thickening blood

Erythropoietin (EPO)

• Make you urinate – weight loss• Can mask traces of other drugs

• Cramp• Fatigue• Dehydration

Diuretics

So what sports would benefit from

them?

Completely banned in sports that require a steady hand and calm nerve = archery, snooker

• Block adrenaline• Slow heart rate, breathing rate, B.P• Suppress feelings of anxiety and nervous tension - relaxant

• Side effects - Depression - They can reduce the HR so much that there is a

danger that the heart may stop.

Beta Blockers

Drug Testing• 2 urine samples – A and B• ‘A’ is tested• If positive then ‘B’ is checked

• Refusing test –serious as failing one• Positive tests = ban

TASKCASE STUDY – Group Presentation

Must : Research an athlete who has taken drugs to enhance sporting performance

- What drug did they use?- How did it enhance performance?

Should: Research what happened to them? i.e. side effects/ban

Could: Research that drug in more detail – what are all of the possible effects on the body and how could it improve sporting

performance?
