Role of Drafting

• Architectural sketches are rough, unfinished drawings.

Drafting Tools

• Drawing Board• T-square• Triangle• Protractor• Compass• Divider• Template• Architectural Pencils• Drafting Paper• Drafting Tape

Drawing Board

• Made of soft wood – bass wood

• Surface must be:o Flato Smooth

T-square

• Shaped like a T• The top is placed

along the side of the drawing board

• The long strip, or blade, is 90 degrees to the head and is used to draw lines across the drawing

Triangle

• Precision tool for drawing lines at specific angles

• Drafting triangle always has one right angle making it possible to put the triangle against a T-square to draw vertical lines.o 30-60-90 Triangleo 45-45-90 Triangle

Protractor

• Used to draw angles other than 90, 45, 30, or 60.

• A half circle with markings for a 180 degree arc

Compass

• Used to draw circles or arcs

Divider

• Tool used to compare sizes of drawing electing

Template

• Flat piece of plastic with standard symbols cut in it – doors, windows, plumbing fixtures, electrical devices, and landscape features.

Architectural Pencils

• Made with a number of grades ranging from hard to soft.o 9H is the hardest gradeo 7B is the softest grade

• In general 4H is used for light layout lines and guide lines while a sharp H is used for thin dark line such as dimension lines. A blunted F is used for think/dark object lines.

Drafting Paper

• Paper• Vellum• Plastic film

Drafting Tape

• Used to mount papers to the drawing boards to avoid damage to the plans or the board.
