2008 Annual Report
OuR AppReciAtiOn
Dearest Friends, It is our honor to present The Family Learning Center's Annual Report to all of our much-appreciated supporters. The last 28 years have been filled with immense accomplishments for The Family Learning Center and 2008 was no different.
The Family Learning Center is flourishing and influencing more lives each year. We began as a preschool cooperative serving 43 low-income children and we have grown into a full-service human service agency serving over 2,000 individuals annually.
Our programs are designed to support families by increasing employment opportunities, facilitating access to enhanced health and wellness, providing quality childcare and preschool programs, and improving the educational performance of children of all ages.
The Family Learning Center has received numerous awards over the last 28 years: the Boulder Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year Award and Boulder County Business Report's IQ Award for outstanding innovative program service delivery.
We are extremely proud of our accomplishments, however the greatest reward is seeing our children and families succeed. For example, during the 2007–2008 school year, 100 percent of The Family Learning Center's high school seniors graduated and 95 percent were accepted into college. All preschoolers made significant improvements in school readiness skills. Virtually 100 parents completed a comprehensive literacy program.
We are keenly aware that your support is essential to our success and aids our ability to provide services to thousands of low-income children and families. On behalf of all the children and families who benefit by being part of The Family Learning Center, we extend our deepest appreciation.
Sincerely,
Cindy O'KeeffePresident
Brenda LyleExecutive Director and Founder
who we areThe Family Learning Center is a 501(c)(3)
tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization
located in Boulder, Colorado. We are a
comprehensive human service agency
that annually provides thousands of
low-income children and families with
programs and skills training in youth and
family development, education, health and
wellness and community development.
our missionOur mission is to encourage successful
lifelong learning and economic self-
sufficiency for families of diverse cultures
and limited incomes, in a learning
environment where families feel nurtured,
respected and empowered.
We help ignite the potential in children and
families by providing the tools to achieve
success in school and life. We believe
that family and community offer the best
framework for healthy, social, academic,
civic and ethical development of children
and families.
By offering educational opportunities
for the entire family, we create families
who value education, self-reliance and
community service.
"The Family Learning Center has always believed in me, even when I did not believe in myself. They wanted the best for me and thanks to their constant support, I was the first person in my family to graduate from high school." - Jose, an after school program participant
who we serveThe Family Learning Center is an inclusive community, where children
and families of all races and from all walks of life are welcomed. Many
of our families live in subsidized housing communities in Boulder
and Broomfield Counties and depend on a variety of government and
private aid programs.
Our families have a strong work ethic and a deep commitment
to improve the quality of life for their children and families. Our
programs support their goals by increasing employment opportunities,
facilitating access to health and wellness, providing quality childcare
and preschool programs, improving the educational performance of
children of all ages, promoting economic self-sufficiency, enhancing
parenting skills and, ultimately, breaking the bondage of prolonged
cycles of poverty.
how we beganEstablished in 1981 by community organizer Brenda Lyle and local
advocates and parents, The Family Learning Center began as an
early childhood co-op for 43 low-income preschool children and
their families. Today it has grown to become a full-service human
services agency, serving more than 2,000 children and families a year,
supported by a volunteer Board of Directors, a staff of over 18 and
more than 200 volunteers.
For 28 years, The Family Learning Center has provided low-income and
culturally-diverse children and families with meaningful opportunities
to become educated, productive members of the community who can
successfully compete in a global society.

thOse invOlveDThe Family Learning Center is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, that sets policies and oversees fiscal management of The Family
Learning Center, and an Executive Director that manages day-to-day operations. The Board is comprised of community leaders, business
professionals, educators and representatives from the families we serve. The Board of Directors has 100% financial participation and gives
an average of 15 hours per month in volunteer services. The Center has over 200 community volunteers who provide one-on-one tutoring and
mentoring to the children and families we serve.
2008 penfield tate humanitarian award recipientsThe annual Penfield Tate Humanitarian Award was created by The Family Learning Center to honor the memory and legacy of the late Penfield
Tate, a former mayor of Boulder and civil rights lawyer. Last year at the 14th Annual Penfield Tate Humanitarian Awards Dinner, Jane McConnell
and TJ Heyman were the recipients of the honor. They were selected based on their outstanding contributions to the Boulder community.
McConnell is the View Chair of The Community Foundation and she has also had significant impact with EFAA. Heyman launched the “Culture
of Giving,” a grassroots campaign through The Community Foundation, to raise awareness and elevate charitable giving locally. The event was a
huge success!
A highlight of the event — which included a silent auction and live auction — was when George Boedecker, Jr., founder of Crocs, Inc. and the
Boedecker Foundation (aka Anthony H. Kruse Foundation), made a personal donation of $50,000 to The Family Learning Center and encouraged
the Boulder community to dig deep and support those in need during these difficult financial times.
The Family Learning Center (FLC) is one of the least known institutions that have the most significant impact on the lives of so many families on Boulder County. While The FLC focuses on the full scope of education and empowerment for each member of low income families, they are a national model for inclusiveness and economic self-sufficiency. They engage people to bring out the best in themselves while positively impacting the lives of the rich, middle class and people of diverse political views. This organization has succeeded in fulfilling the dreams of kids and adults who’s potential was ignited to achieve excellence in their educational, community, and vocational careers. They have founded and launched programs that received national recognition with staff and volunteers who unselfishly give of themselves every measure necessary to help constituents succeed in life. The people who are a part of The Family Learning Center are passionate about serving their families and the community with high ethical standards. They take it personally because that’s what they stand for. - George Crochet
