Dorothea Nutzhorn (Lange)

• Was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, on 26th of May, 1895.

• When Lange was seven she got polio. She had a limp the rest of her life.

• When her father left her family she changed her last name to her mothers maiden name.

Inspiration

• Lange was an active photographer. She wanted to show the world for what it was.

• The world did not fully feel the emotions of her photos until 1972.

• She was and still is an inspiration to all photographers.

• Though Lange showed the hard lives of Americans she captured her subjects beauty.

• She opened the our eyes to the cruelty of the imprisoned Japanese Americans, the harshness of the Depression and so much more.

Who was Dorothea Lange

• She studied to be a teacher than changed her mind deciding to be a photographer.

• She studied under Clarence White at Columbia University.

• In 1918 Lange moved to San Francisco to start a portrait studio.

Life in San Francisco

•After Lange joined the California Camera Club she met Consuelo Kanga.•Lange admired Kanga’s idea of photography and followed her form of style. •Kanga was a photojournalist for the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Depression

• Lange was very successful until the Depression in 1929.

• During the Depression she started to turn to social realism.

• Her first series of photos were of unemployed males, White Angel Breadline (1932).

• Her own photos showed her Americas critics.• In 1934 Williard Van Dyke published an article

showing and talking about Lange’s work.

On Arizona Highway 87, south of Chandler, Arizona. This a grandma and baby of migratory family. They came from Amarillo, Texas, to pick cotton in Arizona.
