Intro

Objective 09/27/12

Identify the layers of the Earth.

If you tried to dig to the center of the earth, what do you think you would find? Would earth be solid or hollow? Would it be made of the same material throughout?

Earth’s Systems

Earth’s Layers – Physical Properties

Lithosphere Physical property: solid, rigid

“Litho” means rock

Includes: Crust Upper part of

mantle Broken into

pieces called tectonic plates

Layers of the Earth

Asthenosphere Physical property: liquid & solid (like soft wax)

Flows VERY slowly Includes: upper

mantle

Layers of the Earth

Mesosphere Physical property: liquid & solid (like a very thick syrup)

Includes: lower mantle

“Meso” means middle

Layers of the Earth

Outer Core Physical Property: liquid

Molten iron

Inner Core Physical property: solid

Earth to surface = 6,380km (3,833miles)

Temperature = 5,430°C (9,800°F).[

The Layers of the Earth

Summary: The inside of the earth is divided into three layers based on their composition: the crust, the mantle, and the core. Based on physical properties it’s split into five layers: lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, inner core and outer core.
