Finished in 1988 by architects Hardy, Holtzman + Pfeier and Robert Maguire, the gardens at the LA Public Library are linked to the popular Bunker Hill Steps that draw much attention in Los Angeles. The gardens are meant to be a passive yet welcoming public space, including a restaurant, outdoor dining, fountains and pools, and site-specic public art. The Postmodern in style of all of these elements contributes to a distinguished setting for the iconic style of the library, originally designed by Bertram Goodhue in 1926.
MAGUIRE GARDENS | LAWRENCE HALPRINSouth Flower Street, Los Angeles, CA at the LA Public Library
This project by Halprin is estranged frrom his usual style of work, being one of the only projects that addresses a historic landscape’s features and aims to preserve it. Halprin not only restored and drew inspiration from Goodhue’s exisisting pool, but extended it west towards South Flower Street. From this central point, created new pools and winding walkways to re-organize new the space and guide people’s movements. The art displayed is by Jud Fine, who designed the reecting pools and grotto fountain, and Laddie John Dill with Mineo Mizuno who designed Font Fountain.

“The representation is composite, seeing what is there and constructing a way of seeing it, providing the generative detail that can become the design..” -Genevieve S. Baudoin
Los Angeles Public Library was designed by architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and is known for being the third largest central library in the nation. Over 2 million vistiors come to the library a year. Surrounding the central tower of the building, there are Magurie gardens, foun-tains, and a cafe that provides and area for people to rest and enjoy. This collage represents the front view of the library with the fountains. For a rst time visitor, that ancient-eqyptians’ architecture of the library would be the rst thing that catches their eyes. Then, they will be impressed by three big fountains that are aligned from the front entry of the library, sculptures that are placed inside and outside of the fountains, details of the steps and the buildings. Also, by moving around, Magurie gardens will oer people a place where they can sit and walk. Los Angeles Public Library allows people to experience a variety of things by observing not only the library itself but also its surrounding.

1.3 Section view of Los Angeles Public Library
“As humans, we have been given ve senses; vision, audition, gusta-tion, olfaction, and somatosensation. Experi-ence occurs from these senses. Many landscape architects create their designs by caturing to these experiences. Expe-riencing site is about how landscape architects are inuenced by the experience and approaching project by capturing and under-staning it. ”
1.1 Topographic map of Los Angeles Public Library
1.2 Figure ground map of Los Angeles Public Library with line of section cut
It is important so Landscape Architects can understand what is there and what wants to be because it is about both the result and the beginning of all construc-tion projects. According to topographic map on the right (1.1), Los Angeles Public Library does not have dynamic topography compared to what is around. However, like section view on the bottom (1.3), what has been built on the ground creates an excited topogra-phy of the library. By Stepping inside the area, people can physically experience dierent elevations of the ground.

Grand Hope Park and Maguire Gardens are both located in the context of Los Angeles by a gure ground map, depicting the location as a light green. Through this gure fround map we can also see that there is more void space in the Maguire Garden area then in Grand Hope Park.

A system “encompasses everything and anything that persists beyond the boundaries of a site, or that can be tapped into but it must be mentally or literally able to be assembled into related parts.”
As these dynamic and uid systems of that example inuence our design, systems of infrastructure also play and important role in the design process. Infrastructural systems are built in response to these dynamic system of ow and change.

MOSTLY SUNNY, MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE
THE ENV PLAZA IS A SMALL OPEN SPACE THAT DOES NOT HAVE MUCH PLANTS MASSING. BECAUSE THE SITE IS MOSTLY SUNNY, PLANTING FINE TEXTURED TREES SUCHA AS THE CHITALPA WOULD BE GREAT FOR PROVIDING COOL SHADE. EVERGREEN PLANTS SUCH AS LAVENDER WOULD ALSO MAKE A GREAT ADDITION FOR THE PLEASANT SMELL AND LOOK. THE TWO ADDITIONS WOULD CREATE A MORE WELCOMING PLAZA AND BE EASY TO MAINTAIN IN THE HEAT AND TAKE LESS WATER.
