Dear Beverly Families,
It is that time of year when the weather can be somewhat unpredictable so I thought we could
use this little reminder about procedures for inclement weather. Here are the procedures from
our family handbook:

Important Attendance Policy Changes This year, the Edmonds School District is making a special effort to ensure that all students fully benefit from their education by attending school regularly. Attending school helps children feel better about school – and themselves. Your student can start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Consistent attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and at work. By 6th grade absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school. Absences are considered chronic if a student misses 10% or more of the school year for any reason - this includes excused and unexcused absences. In 2016, Legislators mandated schools to increase their interventions to help students attend school on time every day. In January, Edmonds School District will implement the following policies and procedures in an effort to comply with Washington State Law. The BECCA Law requires us to: 1. For one or two unexcused absences – notify you with a phone call or letter 2. For 5 unexcused or 10 excused absences – request a parent conference with you 3. For 7 or more unexcused in one month or ten or more unexcused absences in a year, the school is required to file petition with the courts.
What you can do: 1. Set a regular bedtime and morning routine and prepare for school the night before. 2. Don’t let your student stay home unless they are truly sick. 3. Avoid appointments and extended trips when school is in session. 4. Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. 5. Keep track of your student’s attendance and talk to them about the importance of attending, on time, every day.
We look forward to partnering with you in the best interest of your student. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office.
High School Start/End Times Task Force Update Online feedback form available: please submit your ideas, suggestions The High School Start/End Times Task Force, consisting of staff, community members and students are meeting
through December of this school year with the goal of producing a viable proposal on later high school start times to present to the greater District community for feedback and input. The committee is faced with a difficult and complex task and is considering various impacts created by any change. Information on the meetings of these groups along with research, agendas, other districts’ information and meeting summaries can be found on the Committee’s webpage at
www.edmonds.wednet.edu/highschoolstarttimes.
All community members will have an opportunity to offer input, feedback and opinion on any proposal that comes out of the task force before being submitted to the School Board for consideration. Those feedback loops and processes are still being developed. However, if, in the meantime anyone has ideas or suggestions for the committee prior to then, there is an input form available at the link below:

NEWS FROM THE GYM
Hi Friends and Families from the gym,
On this season of giving, I want to offer an easy way to contrib-ute—and a little glimpse into my classroom! To make sure my
students have the materials they need to succeed, I’ve created a page on DonorsChoose.org:
Mr. Davis’s Classroom
Support my classroom today and just think of all the students we could help! Your support would be a major win for our students. They’ve already accomplished so much this year, and I can’t wait
to help them grow even more. Thank you so much, Mr. Davis (Tom)
P.S. If you know anyone who may want to help, please pass this along!
Join us - Principal Coffee Chat!
THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:
After the presidential election, a number of parents have expressed wanting a chance to discuss their
own questions, thoughts, and feelings. During this month’s coffee chat we would like to offer some
time for families to discuss and process in a safe and supportive space. We will also use this as an
opportunity to begin thinking about ways we can ensure Beverly is a place where all students and
families feel safe and included.
