INTRODUCTION
• According to the dictionary : "it's a criminal activity committed on the internet. This is a broad term that describes everything from electronic cracking to denial of service attacks that cause electronic commerce sites to lose money"
What is CYBER CRIME?
• A simple yet study definition of cyber crime would be “unlawful acts wherein the computer is either a tool or a target or both”. Defining cyber crimes, as “acts that are punishable by the information Technology Act” would be unsuitable as the Indian Penal Code also covers many cyber crimes, such as e-mail spoofing, cyber defamation etc.
Who are Cyber Criminals?
• The cyber criminals constitute of various groups/ category. This division may be justified on the basis of the object that they have in their mind. The following are the category of cyber criminals-

• Hacking means entering into someone’s pc or network without the permission of the user.

Virus Dissemination
• Malicious software that attaches itself to other software. (virus, worms, Trojan Horse, Time bomb, Logic Bomb, Rabbit and Bacterium are examples of malicious software that destroys the system of the victim.

Spoofing
• A spoofing attack is a situation in which one person or program successfully masquerades as another by falsifying data and thereby gaining an illegitimate advantage
Cyber Stalking
• The use of information and communications technology, particularly the Internet, by an individual or group of individuals, to harass another individual, group of individuals, or organization.
Cyber Defamation
• The criminal sends e-mails containing defamatory matters to all concerned of the victim or post the defamatory matters on a website
Cyber Pornography
• Pornography can be defined as a psychological dependence upon cyber pornography, theoretically characterized by obsessive viewing, reading, and thinking about pornography and sexual themes to the detriment of other areas in the world of Internet
• Punishable under the provisions of section 67 of I.T. Act-2000
Indian law for Cyber Crime
• "The IT Act, 2000 is not comprehensive enough and doesn't even define the term 'cyber crime'". In fact, the Act cites such acts under a separate Chapter XI entitled 'Offences', in which various crimes have been declared penal offences punishable with imprisonment or a fine.

• Wellington, New Zealand — Nov 29, ‘07 — Police nabbed the suspected teenage, 18 year old, kingpin of an international cyber crime network accused of infiltrating 1.3 million computers and skimming millions of dollars from victims’ bank accounts and providing the information to Third Parties.
6. Conclusion
• It is quite possible to check cyber crime. History is the witness that no legislation has succeeded in totally eliminating crime from the globe. The only possible step is to make people aware of their rights and duties (to report crime as a collective duty towards the society) and further making the application of the laws more stringent to check crime.
