5

What’s wrong with the old IT?

o It’s Electronic Concrete

o It supports yesterday’s processes

o One size does NOT fit all

o You cannot downsize if the economy goes down

o It’s a cost sink of massive proportions

o Innovation only at the vendor speed

o Replacing it is a nightmare

o It’s All or Nothing: “Big Bang” programs instead of incremental change

6

The New IT:Business Process Managemento The new IT focuses on Business Process

o Sharing of processes and data

o Enabling Cross-functional collaboration

o Centre stage for the user across all applications

o Making IT costs variable

o The eternal Business – IT gap is finally bridged: “What you model is what you run”

o The new IT infrastucture is not based on Applications but on the autonomous layers of a Process Platform

8

The Rise of the Process Platform

o We are witnessing the rise of the Process Platform in IT

o Enabling technologies are maturing and are delivered in “platform suites”

o Applications increasingly make use of these generic enabling technologies as “building blocks”

o And the fun part is: most companies already own and use several layers of the Process Platform today!

9

The rise of the Process Platform

o Application Architecture is moving from application-centric to platform-centric

o In the coming years (2009-2012) decisions on investment and deployment of new infrastructure or applications solutions must be aligned with this paradigm shift to serve business priorities and to prevent wasting money

10

The road to a Process Platform: traditional applications

o Traditionally applications have been self-contained units delivering functionality to their users independently and integrating information through interfaces and connections “under the hood”

o This has led to widespread Application Integration Spaghetti

o In this model, applications are user-facing through proprietary user interfaces, have their internal business logic and use a proprietary database to store their data

The road to a Process Platform: a shared infrastructure

o Increasingly over time these traditional applications were deployed on a common shared infrastructure platform

The road to a Process Platform: Enterprise Application Integration

o In the late 90s specific integration software arrived that was able to create order in the spaghetti chaos under the hood: Enterprise Application Integration

o This enabled rewiring the Spaghetti into orderly messsage exchange “under the hood”

13

The road to a Process Platform: Portals

o In the early 00s specific software arrived that was able to create a unified user experience through decoupling the UI from the application logic: Portals

o This enabled a unified role-based view on functionality for the user

The road to a Process Platform: Service Oriented Architecture

o The SOA architectural style enables the development of reusable services that can be orchestrated and composed into composite applications crossing functional domains

The road to a Process Platform: Business Process Management & Workflow

o Over the last few years special software arrived (BPMS) that can model and execute Business Processes based on formal Business Rules using underlying application logic packaged as services

18

Architecture is the key to the Process Platform and Enterprise BPM

o Leveraging BPM and SOA for the enterprise can only be done by applying holistic Enterprise Architecture

o The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) is the industry-leading best practice framework for Enterprise Architecture

o Adopted by SAP in its Enterprise Architecture Framework

o Characteristics:

o A Process-oriented iterative approach to architecture (End to End)

o Aware that there are no “Green Fields”

o Putting Business first

o Involving all stakeholders in one Process

o Provides guidance on improving Process, Content, Program Management and Innovation

19

BPM Concepts are still evolving, so applying them takes careful Roadmap planning

22

Business Process Management Suites

o A Business Process Management Suite (BPMS) is a software stack enabling the deployment and management of business processes independent of underlying applications

o Beware: BPM Suites are new products

o The software suites are currently hyped, but there are still many contenders with a shake-out to follow in the coming years

o SAP is very late to market with its NetWeaver BPM product, which is currently not yet fully functional (eg no “intermediate events” which are almost always required in production-ready scenario’s )

23

An Example

o The example used shows the Design Time environment of SAP NetWeaver BPM which can be accessed in the NetWeaver Developer Studio view “Process Composer”

o It shows the modeling of a Purchase Approval Process with mixed human and system activities

o If you would like a more comprehensive demo we can arrange for this separately using our live demo environment

30

Key Points

1. BPM is the new IT

2. SOA is the big enabler

3. The process platform is coming

4. Create a Process-oriented enterprise architecture

5. Organize your IT in platform layers

6. Migration is incremental

7. Big application platforms will be mature in 5 years, so plan for it: a roadmap is crucial
