Cell Structure and Function

Contributors to the Cell Theory Robert Hooke (1665)- used a compound

microscope to observe thin slices of cork (bark). He observed the cork was made of tiny compartments; he named them cells.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1674)- first to describe living cells he called “animalcules” in drops of pond water.

Matthias Schleiden (1838)- observed tissues of plants are made of cells.

Cell Theory

Theodor Schwann (1839)- struck by the structural similarities between plant and animal cells. He concluded that all living things are made of cells.

Rudolf Virchow (1855)- proposed that all cells come from other cells.

Schleiden Schwann Virchow

All organisms are made of cells.

All existing cells are produced by other cells.

The cell is the most basic unit of life.

Cells can be separated into two broad categories based on their internal structures. What are they?
