Uses

Root bark and fruit are astringent, tonic .Bark is bitter, tonic, astringent, anti periodic and vermifuge.Fruit is emollient, purgative and anthelmenthicOil is local stimulant, insecticide and antiseptic.Leaves are antihelmenthic.Flowers are stimulant, tonic and stomachic.Gum is stimulant and demulcent.Neem also possess anti spirochaetal, antimalarial (gedunin), antipeptic (nimbidin).

Pharmacological properties- Antiarrhythemic activity, cardio tonic properties, anti platelet aggregation activity, anti inflammatory activity, anti diarrhea, use in ocular trachoma, activity against intestinal parasite.

Oedema (Shotha)

Pharmacological studies have demonstrated that Punarnava possesses punarnavoside, which exhibits wide range of diuretic properties –(Gaitonde,et,al)

Nimba - diuretic properties Adraka – anti inflammatory action due to the

inhibition prostaglandin release, anticoagulant property –reduces platelet thromboxane synthesis and removes obstruction in circulation.

Kutaki - anti inflammatory actionGuduchi – antimicrobial Darvi –anti platelet aggregation activity-inhibited PAF

, anti inflammatory activity- it inhibit drug induced vascular permeability.

Parshvashula, Shvasa, Kasa

Due to Katu Vipaka and Ushna Virya (K-V shamaka) of most drug , it works on Shwasa & Kasa.

Punarnava reduces volume-over load of vascular compartment by diuretic property so it helps in cardiogenic asthma.

Ginger has anti rhinovirus activity which is cause for common cold.

Nimba has antitubercular property.Kutaki contains Adrosin -which has anti asthamatic activity

preventing the expression of the allergen & PAF that induces bronchial obstruction , it also has mast cell stabilizing property.

Ascitis (Udara)

Punarnavashtaka kwatha due to its laghu, ruksha, sukshma & mutrala property reduces strotorodha.

Most of drug possess anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral activities. Some drugs have hepatoprotective activity thus improving hepato-portal circulation, which in result decreases fluid collection in peritoneal layer.

By Dipana & Pachana (proper enzymatic reaction in Liver) of Punarnava ,Kutaki, shunthi ,Guduchi, causes formation of Rakta Dhatu.Punarnava increases release of erythropoietin from the kidney. Thus increases HB %.

This combination of drugs also helps in krumija pandu.
