ConcreteCornholeCompetition

ObjectiveTheobjectiveoftheConcreteCornholeCompetitionistouseyourknowledgeofconcretemixdesigntoconstructacornholeboardthatwillbeusedinafunandfriendlycornholetournamentatthe2016ASCESoutheastStudentConference.EligibilityOne(1)teamperschoolwillbeallowedtoparticipateintheconcretecornholecompetition.Teamscanconsistoftwo(2)tofour(4)students.Onlyone(1)ofthestudentsmaybeagraduatestudent.BoardDimensionsTheboardistobefour(4)feetinlengthandtwo(2)feetinwidth.Theholewillbesix(6)inchesindiameter.Thecenteroftheholewillbenine(9)inchesfromthetopedgeandone(1)footfromeitherside(SeeFigure1below).Alldimensionshaveatolerance±0.25in.Therearenominimumormaximumthicknessrequirementsfortheboard.

ThecornholebagswillbeprovidedbyTheUniversityofAlabamaatthetimeofthetournament.Theywillbe6in.x6in.andweigh15±1oz.Asupportstructurefortheboardswillalsobeprovidedandisdetailedintheplayingfieldsection.Thesupportsystemwillbeconstructedwith2X4sandhavealipatthebottomthatwillstoptheboardsfromslidingdowntheincline,asdemonstratedinFigure4.MixDesignTeamsarerequiredtofilloutthemixdesignsheetprovidedinAppendixAandsubmitittothejudges.a. CementitiousMaterials

TeamsarepermittedtouseanyofthefollowingcementitiousmaterialsaslongastheymeettheASTMstandardforthematerial:

• PortlandorHydraulicCement(ASTMC150/C595/C1157)

• FlyAsh(ASTMC618)

• SlagCement(ASTMC989)

• SilicaFume(ASTMC1240)

Thewatertocementitiousmaterialsratio(w/cm)mustbe0.35orgreater.b. Aggregate

Aggregatesmustpassa½in.(12.7mm)sieveandberetainedona#200sieve.Theconcretemustcontainatleast30%aggregatebyvolumeofconcrete.c. Admixtures

ChemicaladmixturesthatmeetASTMC494and/orASTMC260areallowed.d. Reinforcement

Teamsareallowedtousefiberreinforcement(ASTMC1116)orreinforcementgrid.JudgingEachteamcansubmitonlyone(1)boardforjudgingandtournamentplay.TeamsmustsubmittheirboardandmixdesignformtothejudgesonFridayatatimeandlocationtobeannounced.Boardsmustbepickeduptheendoftheday(timetobeannounced),andTheUniversityofAlabamaisnotresponsiblefortransportingboardstothesiteofactivitiesonSaturday.Boardswillbejudgedonaesthetics,conformitytodimensions,andadherencetomixdesign.

AestheticsTeamsareencouragedtodecoratetheirboardsascreativelyaspossible.Theboardcanbefinishedwithanyvarietyoftextures,stains,andsealers.Thenameoftheuniversityyourepresentmustbedisplayedontheboard.Nostickersordecalsareallowed.TournamentTournamentPlayAsingleeliminationbracketwilldeterminetournamentplay.Seedingwillbedeterminedaccordingtoeachteam’s“AestheticsSub-Total”and“TechnicalSub-Total”asshownintheonthescoringsummarysheet.Byeswillbeawardedtotheteamswiththehighestscoresandasdictatedbythenumberofteamsparticipating.

GamePlayEachgamewillbeplayedtotwenty-one(21)points;thefirstteamtoreachorexceed21pointswillbedeclaredthewinner.Aroundconsistsofone(1)playerfromeachteamthrowingallfour(4)bags.Eachgamewillconsistofhowevermanyroundsittakesforoneteamtoreachorexceed21points.

Bagsthatlandontheboardandstayontheboardareworthone(1)point.Bagsthatgothroughtheholewillbeworththree(3)points.Bagsthatbounceontotheboardfromthegrounddonotcountandmustberemovedbeforethenextbagisthrown.Bagsthatwereontheboardandpushedoffbyanotherbagdonotcount.Attheendoftheround,pointswillbetotaledforeachteam,andthedifferenceoftheteams’pointswillbeawardedtotheteamthathadthehighestscore.Eachroundwillresultinonlyoneteambeingawardedpointstotheiroverallscore.Forthefirstround,theteamwiththehigherseednumberwillgosecond.Theteamthatscoredthepreviousroundwillstartfollowingrounds.Ifnopointswerescoredinaround,theteamtoscorethelastpointsgoesfirst.Teammemberswillbeonalternatesidesofthepitchandstayinthesamelane.Playerswillalternatethrowingbags(oneatatime)untileachplayerhasthrownallfour(4)ofhisorherbags.Bagsmustbethrownunderhand.Ifaplayercrossesoutsideofthepitchersbox,thatbagdoesnotcountandcannotbere-thrown.FortheTier4andTier5games,teamsmustscoreexactly21pointstowinthegame.Ifateamexceedsthe21points,itsscorewillgodownto15points,andnormalgameplaywillresume.PlayingField

5 ∗ 40 + 10*Boardineligibilityorfailureresultsinnoadded10points.AestheticsBoardaestheticswillbejudgedbasedoncreativity,originality,andoverallqualityofdesign.Eachteamiseligibletoreceive20pointsbasedonaesthetics.ConformitytoDimensionsOncethejudgesreceivetheboardsonFriday,eachboardwillbemeasuredforlength,width,thickness,holediameter,andthepositionofthehole.Theteamswillberankedbasedonboardthicknesswiththethinnestboardgettingtheentire30points.Allotherpointswillbelinearlydeterminedinadescendingorder.

Teamswillthenbedeductedfive(5)pointsfromthepointsawardedforthicknessperfailuretomeetspecifieddimensions(notincludingthickness).ItispossibletoreceiveanegativescorefortheTechnicalSub-Total.AdherencetoMixDesignFailuretomeetanyofthespecifiedcriteriawillresultinafifteen(15)-pointdeductionfromtheTechnicalSub-Total.
