Elementary School second graders set
the theme by singing “Take Me Out to
the Ball Game” on Nick Raftis Memori-

49th time on the Elks Flag Pole, shout-

MOTHER’S DAY from

Rural Ministry Cleanup Report
On a cold, snowy “Spring?” Cleanup
Day, under the direction of Tioga Coun-
ty Rural Ministry, 40 volunteers from
Tioga, Broome and Tompkins Counties
ventured out into the towns of Owego
and Apalachin to help their senior neigh-
bors who were in need of some assis-
tance. From dusting, vacuuming, spot
cleaning and window washing to laying
down mulch, clearing gardens, picking
up sticks and twigs to trying to rake
leaves through the snow, these hardy
workers from Owego Free Academy and
Candor High School, Binghamton Uni-
versity, Ithaca College and Cornell,
along with volunteer drivers/supervisors
worked at 41 sites.
Sr. Mary of Tioga County Rural Min-
istry had the opportunity to sit down
with Ithaca College and Cornell stu-
dents, inviting responses to the question
of why they volunteer to help. Teresa
Clark’s response was immediate: “The
people are so welcoming and apprecia-
tive.” Cassandra, a grad student from
Cornell spoke of her own personal need
to do community service. She experi-
enced the fulfillment of this need last
year and so wanted to return. Nolan
Hurst of Ithaca College noted that this is
his third year coming: “The community
that’s built here is a one of a kind thing.
It is awesome and inspiring.”
Tioga County Rural Ministry (TCRM)
is so grateful for these young adults who
are willing to lend a hand. TCRM wants
to honor the 30 adult volunteers who
made this day possible by visiting sites
beforehand, preparing lunches and serv-
ing as drivers/supervisors. TCRM thanks
the First Presbyterian Union Church for
allowing use of their kitchen for lunch
preparation, and to its members, along
with Kiwanis and Rotary members who
supplied food and materials for lunches.

Annual AMBA Wellness Program - May 21 The New York State Women, Inc.
Susquehanna Chapter (formerly Owego
Business and Professional Women) is
sponsoring its annual AMBA Wellness
Program on Saturday, May 21, at the
Owego Methodist Church at 261 Main
Street from 6:00 to 10:00 am.
The AMBA Wellness Program in-
cludes blood tests for Coronary Disease,
Liver and Kidney Disease, Anemia, Dia-
betes, and other types of diseases. The
cost for the full AMBA panel, including
the NYS Women, Inc. sponsorship fee is
$47. The following optional tests are
also available for an additional fee and
require a separate script from a physi-
cian: Prostrate Specific Antigen (PSA),
TSH, Vitamin D - 25, Hemo-globin A1C
and Insure Colon Rectal Kit.
Pam Pringle, chairperson, stated,
“With the changes in health insurance,
many people find themselves with high
deductibles to be met before any ser-
vices are covered. While this has been a
valuable program for many years, it is
even more so now, as those unable or
unwilling to spend hundreds of dollars
for routine testing can still get the
screenings needed to maintain their
health.”
Anyone interested in participating
should contact their physician for per-
mission to have the test results sent to
their office. For more information or to
schedule an appointment call 1-800-234-
8888 by May 20, 2016.
The NYS Women, Inc. Susquehanna
Chapter is a state organization whose
mission is to build powerful women

Owego Businessman Donates $40,000 to BU
The head of Upstate Shredding –
Weitsman Recycling, Adam Weitsman,
recently donated $40,000 to support
Binghamton University’s Educational
Opportunity Program, which identifies
students facing economic challenges but
show promise for success in a college
setting.
“My wife, Kim, and I feel very
strongly about helping young people
pursue a higher education,” said Weits-
man. “Students are often extremely
bright but lack the means to pay for it.
EOP gives students who otherwise
might not go to college a second chance
at a degree.”
Binghamton University’s EOP pro-
gram identifies students who have po-
tential for mastering college-level work
but demonstrate the need for financial
assistance and other support. Once en-
rolled through EOP, students work to
strengthen their personal development
and academic skills as they transition to
the university's social and cultural envi-
ronment.
Students in the program come from
economically challenged backgrounds,
so scholarship assistance significantly
helps defray the cost of a college educa-
tion. The EOP book allowance, which
the Weitsman family has generously
supported, is one important way these
students can reduce their debt while go-
ing to school.
Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recy-
cling has been a long time corporate
citizen, contributing to a number of non-
profit organizations and charities in the
communities they serve. Over the past
several years, Weitsman has donated
over a million dollars in charitable con-
tributions to help those in need.
Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recy-
cling, the East Coast’s largest privately
held scrap metal processor, operates 16
locations throughout New York and
Pennsylvania. For more information on
the company, visit their web site at:

A donation from Upstate Shredding –
Weitsman Recycling is giving the Vil-
lage of Spencer Police Department a
major financial boost.
Last month, Adam Weitsman of Up-
state Shredding presented Chief Michael
Monteiro with a check for $10,000 to be
used to help the department purchase
needed items that they haven’t yet been
able to afford.
The donation is expected to cover the
cost of two tasers, two body cams, a
mobile radio, a heat alarm for the K-9
officer, an alco-sensor and a radar unit.
Any remaining funding will be used to
further update the equipment used by the
department.
“Being able to purchase these items
will dramatically improve the safety of
our officers as well as their ability to
communicate and serve the public effec-
tively, we are extremely grateful to Up-
state Shredding and the Weitsman fami-
ly for their generosity and commitment
to the community,” said Chief Monteiro.
The Village of Spencer Police De-
partment provides law enforcement ser-
vices to residents, visitors, and business-

officers, including one canine unit, cur-
rently make up the force.

Soap for Hope Collection
Tioga County Rural Ministry (TCRM)
will be conducting an area-wide collec-
tion of personal care products throughout
the month of May.
TCRM’s mission statement calls them
to respond to the unmet needs of the
poor, sick and elderly. Personal hygiene
products and household cleaning items
rise to the top of those “unmet” needs.
These products are all items that are not
covered by food stamps, like soap, dish
and laundry detergent, shampoo, toilet
tissue, and facial tissue. TCRM aims to
involve the wider community in efforts
to meet those needs. You can help by
donating an item or two. Even small
sample sizes are welcome.
Be on the lookout for area stores,
businesses, churches and schools who
are graciously hosting TCRM bins
throughout the month of May. So far, the
bins will be in over 35 sites in Owego. If
you don’t see one of the bins, call Sr.
Mary at Tioga County Rural Ministry,
687-3021, and she will be happy to cite
some of the various locations. Or if
you’d like to host a bin in your place of
business, contact her.

Long Term Care Ombudsman Program
Tioga Opportunities, Inc. will offer a
presentation on Long Term Care Om-

term care facilities. Action for Older

Vestal Central School District Selects New Superintendent of Schools
The Vestal Central School
District’s Board of Education is
pleased to announce it has offered
Mr. Jeffrey Ahearn the position as
the new Superintendent of Vestal
Central Schools. He will succeed
Mark LaRoach, who retired at the
end of December 2015.
Mr. Ahearn’s selection con-
cludes a five-month search led by
a professional recruiting firm,
which gathered input from stake-
holders in the district and attract-
ed a large pool of quality candi-
dates. “The Board is very pleased
to have selected Mr. Ahearn as
our new superintendent,” said
Board President Michon Stuart.
“He has served the district well as
interim superintendent, and we
are confident that he will be a
good leader for our students and
our staff.”
A native of Greenwood, New
York, Mr. Ahearn has more than
32 years of experience. He began
his career in the banking industry,
then moved into education, where
he served as Director of Finance
at Alfred State College. He was
also the school business adminis-
trator for Addison Central
Schools and then the Greater
Southern Tier BOCES before
joining the Vestal Central School
District in September 2012 as
School Business Administrator.
In July of 2015, he was named
Assistant Superintendent for Fi-
nance, Operations and Personnel.
Following Mark LaRoach’s re-
tirement, Mr. Ahearn was ap-
pointed Interim Superintendent of
Schools by the Vestal Board of
Education in January 2016.
Pending the successful negoti-
ation of a contract, the Board an-
ticipates making a formal ap-
pointment at its meeting on May
10, 2016. It is anticipated that Mr.
Ahearn will begin as Vestal’s
new superintendent upon his ap-
pointment by the Board of Educa-
tion.
The Board would like to take
this opportunity to thank the staff,
students, parents, community
members and other stakeholders
who participated in this selection
process. Thank you for your help
and for your anticipated support
of the new Superintendent of
Vestal Schools.

Three Owego Hotels Sold Treadway to become Red Roof Inn
Three Owego hotels have recently
been sold.
Scott Grant, Director of Sales and
Operations of Rudra Management Com-
pany, announced that the sale of three
properties has been completed. The sale
includes the 74-room Holiday Inn Ex-
press, the 66-room Hampton Inn and the
80-room Owego Treadway Inn and Con-
ference Center. This property has been
in operation for over 47 years and in-
cludes a 14,000 square foot conference
center and a beautiful 3-meal dining
operation that sits on the edge of the
Susquehanna River.
Rudra Management Company plans
to invest over one million dollars in ren-
ovations and upgrades at the properties.
“We intend to reclaim the
Treadway Conference Cen-
ter’s long held position as
the premier banquet facility
in the Southern Tier, and be
the destination of choice for
area weddings, business
meetings and association
business. All existing con-
tracts will be honored, and we are excit-
ed to reach out to the community to
bring even more business to this won-
derful facility that is embedded in the
fabric of the community.”
The Owego Treadway Inn will under-
go a significant transformation as it is to
be re-branded as a Red Roof Inn. Grant
states “while we recognize the tradition
and value the Treadway facility has rep-
resented over the years, it was our belief
that it was time to freshen up the hotel
and acquiring a national franchise for
the property is a good first step for us.”
The Treadway property is currently open
and will convert to the Red Roof flag
within the next 60 days while
the conference center will con-
tinue operation as the Owego
Treadway Conference Center.
“The Potter family developed
this entire complex over 47
years ago and operated the
properties until the sale. Not
only did we acquire three won-
derful hotels, but also coming on board
with us is all the associates who have
worked for many, many years at the
various properties.” Grant says that “the
decision to keep all of the staff intact
was a simple one. We acquired the keys
and kept operations running without
missing a beat. With everyone pitching
in, we transitioned from the Potter fami-
ly ownership to ours with no downtime,
and no gaps in service.” “This is a testa-
ment to the quality of the personnel that
were at the properties, and we were for-
tunate to maintain.”
Each of these properties is open for
business and looking to acquire even
more customers.

Lalor Dental to Offer Day of Free Dentistry
On Saturday, May 14, 2016, Lalor
Family Dental will provide free dental
care for those in need. The Lalor Family
Dental team will offer one cleaning,
filling or extraction, free of charge, to a
minimum of 200 people. The 8th annual
event will take place at Lalor Family
Dental’s Main Office at 2521 Vestal
Parkway West in Vestal. Registration
begins at 7:30 am and patients will be
seen on a first come, first served basis
beginning at 8:00 am. Visitors are ex-
pected to come from Broome, Tioga and
surrounding counties as the event is
open to everyone in the community. All
ages are welcome and encouraged to
attend.
Lalor Family Dental has been provid-
ing for the dental care needs of the com-
munity for over 50 years. The practice
was started by Dr. Robert T. Lalor, bet-
ter known as “Doc,” whose great com-
passion for his patients and the commu-
nity inspired the very first Free Dental
Care Day event in 2009. Doc’s son and
current practice owner, Dr. Robert A.
Lalor, along with his wife Dr. Mary
John and the rest of the Lalor Family
Dental team, are proud to carry forward
this tradition of giving back to the com-
munity.
In addition to their annual Free Den-
tal Care Day Event, Lalor Family Dental
is giving back to their patients and the
community all year long. Thus far in
2016, the practice has contributed over
$5,680 in donations and sponsorships to
the community with many other ap-
proved donations in the works.
During these difficult economic
times, routine dental care is sometimes
put aside, especially when dental insur-
ance is not always available. Last May,
Lalor Family Dental donated almost
$37,000 in free dentistry to 196 people,
and an even bigger turnout is eagerly
anticipated this year. Recognizing the
need for everyone to keep up good oral
health regardless of insurance, Lalor
Family Dental created their own in-
house Dental Savings Plan in 2013.
There are single and family plans availa-
ble, and all patients without insurance
are welcome to enroll.
For more information, visit the “Free
Dental Care Day” page at
www.LalorDental.com/free-dental-care-
day, or visit the events section of their
Facebook page.
Lalor Family Dental is a full-service,
state of the art dental practice located in
Vestal and Binghamton, and is always
accepting new patients, and offers a
complimentary exam and full set of X-
rays at the first visit. A sister office, Di-
nosaur Dental, opened in 2015.
In addition to general family dentis-
try, the practice offers the latest technol-
ogies in preventive, restorative and cos-
metic dentistry.
