Birds of the Port Wakefield Area
from a book of the same name by Paul Taylor and Wikipedia Skylark Alauda arvensis
An introduced lark from Europe. Skylarks have increased their range and numbers and are now common in farm paddocks, open areas and low coastal vegetation. They do not appear to have adversely affected the populations of native bushlarks and pipits.
Description
The Eurasian skylark is 16 to 18 centimetres long. It is a bird of open farmland and heath, known throughout its range for the song of the male, which is delivered in hovering flight from heights of 50 to 100 m, when the singing bird may appear as just a dot in the sky from the ground. The song generally lasts two to three minutes, but it tends to last longer later in the mating season, when songs can last for 20 minutes or more. The male has broader wings than the female.
Chicken Vermicelli Soup Makes 4-6 serves 500g vermicelli 1 tablespoon olive oil 200g celery, washed and diced 200g carrot, peeled and diced 200g onion, diced 4 litres chicken stock 1 teaspoon dried oregano 2 chicken breasts (approx. 600g) trimmed of fat In a large pot, bring 5 litres of water to boil and add pasta. Cook pasta for 8 minutes or until al dente, then rinse, drain and set aside. Heat olive oil in large pot, add celery, carrot and onion and cook over a low heat for 5 minutes. Add chicken stock and oregano and simmer for 15 minutes with the lid on. Dice chicken breasts into small bite sized pieces, add to pot and simmer for 5 minutes. Add pasta back in to the pot and serve immediately. Season to taste with salt and pepper if desired.

‘At the harvest festival in our church, the area behind the pulpit was piled high with tins of fruit for old-age pensioners. We had collected the tinned fruit from door to door. Most of it came from old-age pensioners.’ (Clive Jones)

Help Wanted Hi to all our local readers near and far. I am Nancy Halls asking for some help. I have been doing bingo in Wakey for many years and love doing it. The problem is we need more callers at bingo. We have 2 great guys, but if one can’t come in it makes it very hard for the other person to call 20 games. We have a good time and we will teach anyone who is willing to learn. If we had another 2 callers they will only call 5 games making it easy for all. We have around 20-25 players and room for more. We would love to see you there. Bingo is every 2nd Friday. Watch the newsletter for dates. For more information please ring Nancy 8867 1255. If no one home you can leave a message and I will ring you back. Many thanks Nancy
Mind over matter I have a sick pig. Is there anything I can do to help him? You might try applying some oinkment. Is it true that 3000 unmarried women standing shoulder to shoulder would reach all the way from New York to California?
Yes, it is true because a miss is as good as a mile.

The ‘opening’ month April is the fourth month of the year. It has thirty days. In ancient Roman times, when the year began in March, April was the second month of the year. The Romans called this month Aprilis. The name comes from a Latin word that means “to open”. Long ago, people living in England named this month for their goddess of spring. Her name as Ostra or Eostre. So they called
this month Oster-monath or Eostur-monath.

How can I freeze leftover fresh herbs to use later? Wash and dry them thoroughly. Place whole or chopped leaves in an airtight bag, squeezing out excess air, or store in a container just large enough to hold them. Seal and freeze for up to 12 months. Once frozen, herbs lose their colour, so use them for cooking, not garnishing.
