Disclaimer: We discuss success in this presentation. Each of our perspectives of success is different. To some, growing a massive and profitable organization is success. To others, adding a few grand extra into their pockets is considered
success. Success is merely defined as setting and accomplishing a goal.

creator(s). Some are vulgar. Some have foul language.
Now that’s over with; let’s do this.

We all have competencies and skills that set us apart
from one another.
Presented by Marc Horne
Blog | FB | Twitter | Email
A key component that sets us apart is in our act of
sharing and learning from information, events, and
stories.
Presented by Marc Horne

The most important function of this is the
actions and decisions we make based upon what we
have learned.

Directly learning from our parents, coaches, and educators is the most
common route.

But I also firmly believe that one of the most skillful traits that we posses is our ability to learn, not from direct
education, but from observation.
Presented by Marc Horne
Blog | FB | Twitter | Email
Being able to observe a business, advertisement,
website, or sales copy, and process insights into its
workings is an incredible asset to possess.

Case studies changed my life in college and continue to feed into my decisions
today.

And not just because it was fun watching entertaining ads in
marketing class, but also because observing other companies helps
my business today.

Learning from failures is just as important (if not more).

Most Common Reasons for Failure
• Supply & Demand - Math
• Bad management & owner troubles
• Growing pains
• Accounting
• Cash flow
• Operational mediocrity and inefficiencies
• Market forces

What Can We Learn From Successful People & Companies ?
• Learn what NOT to do.
• When we focus on learning and reading books, blogs, and news about what others are doing, we are armed with knowledge to make more informed decisions.
• We save time and money by observing and analyzing pre-existing research, market data, sales copy, split tests, and competitors.
• We can see how commercials and advertisements effect the people we’re with by watching them and chatting with them about the ads. If a campaign continues, it most likely means it is successful.

Successful Companies: Make Connections
• Successful individuals and companies are always making new connections building their network and working together.
• How often do you hear other businesses say, “Would you like a coke with that? Very often, the answer is yes. Coca-Cola has integrated with so many organizations.

Successful Companies: Make Strategic Alliances
• Starbucks partnered with Barnes and Nobles bookstores in 1993 to provide in-house coffee shops, benefiting both retailers.
• Starbucks partnered with Pepsico to bottle, distribute and sell the popular coffee-based drink, Frappacino.
• A Starbucks-United Airlines alliance has resulted in their coffee being offered on flights with the Starbucks logo on the cups.
• A partnership with Kraft foods has resulted in Starbucks coffee being marketed in grocery stores.

Successful Companies Leverage Others
• Apple has partnered with Sony, Motorola, Phillips, and AT&T.
• Hewlett-Packard and Disney.
• HC Consulting Group and 123 Employee.
• Insert your company name here & __________.
• With the right leverage, you can move anything and accomplish everything.

Successful Companies: Make Connections
• It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.
• Connect with everyone; people, customers, merchants, clients.
• Who can you connect with?
• What strategic alliances make sense for your business?
• Who can sell your product? Whose products can you sell?
• Integration Marketing is gold.
• Upsell integration.
Presented by Marc Horne
Blog | FB | Twitter | Email
The downside…
• If the company you partner with goes down, they can bring you with them. It wouldn’t have been fun to have been aligned with Enron, for example.
• As with personal relationships, business relationships can sour even quicker.
• Do solid due diligence before forming a strategic alliance. Spend just as much time carefully weighing out the external risks as you do the opportunities.

Successful Companies: Know Who Their Market Is
• What makes your target market laugh, cry, get scared? Who are they? What are they looking for? What makes them “tick?” What do they do for fun?
• Understand your target markets buying behavior. Identify who will be buying and WHY.
• If you aren’t a large organization with the funding to hold your own market research studies, you can piggyback pre-existing studies and data.
• The unlikely alliance. Do not disregard someone. An unlikely connection that you already have may be filled with potential you can’t see yet. Sometimes, even direct competitors can find a way to benefit each other.

Successful CompaniesSolve a Problem
• Big problems or small (think info-mercial).
• Offer solutions that help people solve a problem.
• Help people with what they need, want, or desire.
• Define the problem. Develop a plan / solution. Implement the plan. Analyze the results.
• Research. Ask questions. Gather feedback. Run surveys.
• To solve a problem, you need to ask the right question first.
• Think outside the box. "No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it." - Einstein

Successful CompaniesAre Innovators
• First mover advantages: the advantage gained by the initial ("first-moving") significant occupant of a market segment.
• Second mover advantages: Sometimes, the first mover is not able to capitalize on its advantage, leaving the opportunity for another firm to gain second-mover advantage. Secondary or late movers to an industry or market, have the ability to study the first movers and their techniques and strategies.
• Know the importance of modeling and building upon ideas / products.
• Be different. Stand out. Stand apart. Stand above.
• “Innovation is anything, but business as usual.”

• Learn from unhappy customers. "Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning." - Bill Gates
• "It is not the employer who pays the wages. Employers only handle the money. It is the customer who pays the wages." - Henry Ford
• "You’ll never have a product or price advantage again. They can be easily duplicated, but a strong customer service culture can’t be copied." Jerry Fritz
• "In the world of Internet Customer Service, it’s important to remember your competitor is only one mouse click away." Doug Warner

Successful CompaniesUse Convenience
• Make it easy to buy. Just think of how nice it is when you use Amazon’s one click buy option.
• How much added revenue do you think Godaddy generates through their upsell process?
• Ever dropped in a business simply because it was a convenient location? Location, Location, Location.
• Free shipping and handling ever solidified the deal for you?
• When we make life easy and convenient – people react. People want things handed to them on a sliver platter. People enjoy done for you solutions.
• By being at the top of the search engines for your keywords, you are making it convenient for people to find you.

Successful CompaniesAre Flexible and Adaptable
• Adaptability or flexibility means being able to change as circumstances require it. It recognizes that life will bring us unforeseen challenges and if we are to honor our values and goals, we must adjust and learn as we go. Adaptability requires a certain willingness to let go; don’t be married to an idea.
• "I found out that if you are going to win games, you had better be ready to adapt." Scotty Bowman Convenient locations.

Successful CompaniesAre Flexible and Adaptable
• One of the primary differences between huge corporations and us, is that we have the ability to be more flexible and make company wide decisions more effectively and implement those decisions more efficiently.
• Be flexible with your merchants. Aim to please them and have them run regular offers with and through you.
• Make decisive decisions.
• Keep a close eye on industry trends and be willing to take risks.
