Sports injury

refers to the kinds of injury that occur during sports or exercise. While it is possible to injure any part of the body when playing sports, the term sports injuries is commonly used to refer to injuries of the musculoskeletal system.

SPRAINTEARS TO THE LIGAMENTS THAT JOIN THE ENDS OF BONES TOGETHER. THE ANKLES,

KNEES, AND WRISTS ARE COMMONLY AFFECTED BY SPRAINS.

STRAIN

PULLS OR TEARS OF MUSCLES OR TENDONS (THE TISSUES THAT ATTACH THE MUSCLES TO THE

BONES)

"SHIN SPLINTS"

PAIN ALONG THE OUTSIDE FRONT OF THE LOWER LEG, COMMONLY

SEEN IN RUNNERS

ACHILLES TENDONITIS OR RUPTURE OF THE ACHILLES TENDON

THESE INJURIES INVOLVE THE LARGE BAND OF TISSUE THAT

CONNECTS THE CALF MUSCLES TO THE HEEL

FRACTUREREFERS TO ANY BREAK IN TO THE

CONTINUITY OF THE BONES. CLASSIFIED AS PARTIAL,

MULTIPLE, COMPLETE FRACTURE

DISLOCATION•A DISLOCATION IS AN INJURY TO A JOINT — A PLACE WHERE TWO OR MORE OF YOUR BONES COME TOGETHER — IN WHICH THE ENDS OF YOUR BONES ARE FORCED FROM THEIR NORMAL POSITIONS. THIS PAINFUL INJURY TEMPORARILY DEFORMS AND IMMOBILIZES YOUR JOINT.

IMMEDIATE SPORTS INJURY TREATMENT

•STOP THE STRESSFUL ACTIVITY ON THE INJURED PART IMMEDIATELY

•APPLY ICE TO THE INJURED PART (USE A BAG OF CRUSHED ICE) FOR 10 MINUTES WITHIN 24-48HRS. LET THE AREA WARM COMPLETELY BEFORE APPLYING ICE AGAIN (TO PREVENT FROSTBITE).

•WRAP THE INJURED PART IN A COMPRESSION BANDAGE

•ELEVATE THE INJURED PART TO REDUCE SWELLING

•GET TO A PHYSICIAN FOR A PROPER DIAGNOSIS OF ANY SERIOUS INJURY
