E-Mail• Electronic Mail, commonly
referred to as email or e-mail, a method of exchanging messages from an author to one or more recipients.
• Some early email systems required that the author and the recipient be both online at the same time but today, email systems are based on a store-and-forward model.
Social Bookmarking• It is tagging a website and
saving it for later. Instead of saving it to your web browser, you’re saving it to the web.
• It enables users to add, annotate, edit, and share bookmarks of web documents.
Wiki• “Wiki” is a Hawaiian word
meaning “fast” or “quick”.• A wiki is usually a web
application which allows people to add, modify, or delete content in collaboration with others.
• The encyclopedia project Wikipedia is the most popular wiki in terms of page views.
• WikiWikiWeb is the first wiki software developed by Ward Cunningham.
HTML• A common term and an
abbreviation for HyperText Markup Language.
• It is the main markup language for creating web pages and other information that can be displayed in a web browser.
• Initial release: 1993
Podcast• A podcast or netcast is a
digital medium consisting of an episodic series of audio, video, PDF, or ePub files subscribed to or downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or a mobile device.
• A program made available in digital format for automatic download over the Internet.
• The term podcasting was first mentioned by Ben Hammersley in The Guardian newspaper in a February 2004 article.
VoIP• VoIP stands for Voice over
Internet Protocol. Also referred as IP Telephony or Internet Telephony.
• Enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls.
Online Chat• Any kind of communication
over the Internet that offers a real-time transmission of messages from sender to receiver.
• The first online chat system was called Talkomatic, created by Doug Brown and David R. Woolley in 1974.
WWW• Abbreviated term for
World Wide Web; also known as the web.
• It is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet.
• It is invented by Tim Berners-Lee.
Streaming• Streaming or media
streaming is a techniques for transferring data so that it can be processed as a steady and continuous stream.
Blog• A truncation of the
expression web log• A discussion or
informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries (posts) typically displayed in reverse chronological order.
• The term web log was coined by Jorn Barger. The short term blog was coined by Peter Merholz.
Social Networking• It is the grouping of
individuals into specific groups, although it is possible in person, it is most popular online.
URL• Uniform Resource Locator
(previously Universal Resource Locator)
• Usually pronounced by sounding each letter but, in some quarters, pronounces “Earl”
• Unique address for a file that is accessible on the Internet.
• It is the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web.
Web Feed• A web feed or news feed,
is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content.
• Web feeds are operated by many news websites, weblogs, schools, and podcasters.
