1) Informal (Tú Form) Commands-Informal / Telling somebody to do or not to do

something-This is the most common type of command

2) Formal (Usted and Ustedes Form) CommandsA more formal command / A more polite way of telling somebody to do something

3) Nosotros Form Commands-Used to say “let’s…” -For example: “Let’s eat” , “Let’s Go”

3 Types of Commands

When using commands in Spanish, there are two types:

1) Affirmative = TO DO SOMETHING 2) Negative = NOT TO DO SOMETHING

Informal (Tú) Commands

To form the AFFIRMATIVE: 1) Begin with the infinitive of the verb2) Take off the ending (ar, er, ir) 3) Add:

AR = -a ER = -e

IR = -e

*Note: The Tú form command is the same as the regular Ud. Form present tense.

Affirmative Tú Form Commands

HABLAR HABL__ = HABLA

Comer Com__ = Come

Ejemplos:

1) Eat the sandwich! ¡Come la sándwich!

2) Clean your bedroom! ¡Limpia tu dormitorio!

3) Wear a jacket! ¡Lleva una chaqueta!

Irregulars: Informal Affirmatives

To form the Informal NEGATIVE Command (To tell somebody to NOT DO something):

1) Take the YO FORM, PRESENT TENSE of the verb2) Take off the ending (-o) 3) Add

AR = -es IR = -as ER = -as

*Note: You also need to put “No” before each verb

NEGATIVE Informal (Tú) Commands

Hablar Hablo

Habl__= No hables

Comer Como

Com__= No comas

Ejemplos:

Don´t eat the sandwich! = ¡No comas la sándwich!

Don´t speak! = ¡No hables!

Don’t wear a jacket! =¡No lleves una chaqueta!

Irregulars

*Verbs that have irregular forms in the YO FORM PRESENT TENSE are irregular in the INFORMAL NEGATIVE COMMAND FORM:

Irregulars

Don’t wear the red shirt! ¡No lleves la camisa roja!

Wear the blue shirt! ¡Lleva la camisa azul!

Go to the store! ¡Ve al supermercado!

Buy milk! ¡Compra leche!

Stem Changing Verbs with Commands

Stem Changing Verbs in the Present Tense will also Stem Change in the Command Forms.

Examples:Pensar = Piensa / No PiensesPedir = Pide / No pidasDormir = Duerme / No duermas

When using a reflexive verb in the command form :

Negative:  = place the pronoun befo

re  the command: No te bañes.

Affirmative: = Attach the pronoun to the end of the verb

Empezar = Empieza / No empieces
