A visit to Wilton Library reveals our town’s heart and soul. We strive to be the place that connects our community in a way that benefits everyone. It is here that we come together to learn, share and celebrate -- where we live, who we are, and what we want to become.
Wilton Library is more than a place where you can borrow books for free, access the internet or use a printer. We have those services of course, but even more than that, our building is a community space, designed to serve you and your neighbors. Our resources will indeed enrich you — but go beyond accessing our wealth of traditional and digital materials and you will find plentiful opportunities to discover, connect, innovate, learn and grow. The books are a bonus.
It is our mission as Wilton’s intellectual and cultural center to inform, enrich, connect and inspire our community. We accomplish this not only through our initiatives and resources but also through the countless ways we come together as a community each year — with patrons, local businesses, schools, community groups and organizations.
Our fiscal year 2017/2018 in particular was a year for coming together. Despite the increasing reliance on information available through a few clicks on a touchscreen, people still need a space where they can be with other people — a place that is free and open to all. Wilton Library is not just a resource. It is a community. Read on for a snapshot of the community, coming together at Wilton Library.
“People still need a space where they can be with other people — a place that is free and open to all.”
COMING TOGETHER @ WILTON LIBRARY
WILTON LIBRARY ANNUAL REPORT2017 / 2018
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends:
A recent New York Times article posed the question: “Is the public library obsolete?” The author, Eric Klinenberg, went on to explain that while funding for libraries is challenged, “irrelevance” is not the problem libraries face today. Indeed, libraries are part of what Klinenberg calls the “social infrastructure” —one of the places in society that shapes the way people interact. So, the answer to the question is “No; public libraries are not obsolete.”
Throughout the year, our patrons frequently told us how much they appreciated the wide variety of offerings at our library; they said:
“The library is so alive, and there is so much from which to choose”
As we reflect on this statement, we recall some of those new and unique experiences that made our library come alive and demonstrate how we are a key part of that important “social infrastructure.” Wilton Library draws our community together, whether to satisfy intellectual interests, mollify curiosities, or to interact or share memorable experiences with each other.
One such unique experience was our Total Solar Eclipse Viewing Party. In August, several hundred visitors of all ages waited patiently on the sidewalks to enter the library’s courtyards where they, as a community, could witness and celebrate this celestial phenomenon. Leading up to the event, there were numerous displays, programs and activities in the library in order to educate everyone about this rare event. Most notably on the day, was the generous sharing of a limited number of free give-away viewing glasses as well as several other homemade viewing devices. The occasion was a truly gratifying sight! We were also humbled by the many smiles and outpouring of thanks we received from attendees as they departed.
Another community gathering took place during the Human Library Project. In the small window of a few hours, hundreds of patrons were able to interact with fellow human beings (checking out a human book) to expand their understanding and appreciation of human conditions or societal challenges that these individuals face daily.
On the fun side, our Hot and Cool Jazz series presented the world renowned Cuban jazz virtuoso, Paquito D’Rivera for a concert in our Brubeck Room. His performance at our library was squeezed-in between performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and Le Poisson Rouge in NYC for a benefit concert to aid Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Paquito delighted our audience with renditions of pieces by the legendary Dave Brubeck. He also charmed us by recounting some of his personal interactions with Dave Brubeck.
These were just a few of the ways in which our library came alive and proved our relevance as part of the essential social infrastructure of Wilton. We now invite you to peruse this report to see the numerous other ways in which Wilton came together at Wilton Library.

The Human Library was made possible thanks to the support of our sponsors, Catamount Wealth Management and Mountainside Treatment Center.
Wilton Library’s Human Library was an overwhelming success and far exceeded expectations. More than 250 readers showed up for conversations with the 22 books during the four-hour event. In just a few short hours, Human Library participants gained understanding and compassion for others – their personal challenges, experiences and prejudices – and, at the same time, debunked their own preconceived notions.
WILTON LIBRARY’SHUMAN LIBRARYExploring our differences and engaging each other in new ways.
Readers often strive to spend quality time with a good book that opens up new ways of thinking. Imagine if that book were a real human being that could engage in a meaningful dialogue as you ‘read’ their story. Wilton Library’s Human Library, held on Saturday, March 24, 2018, offered just that opportunity.
The Human Library is an international movement that started in Denmark in 2000. The concept was designed to shatter stereotypes through open conversations between two people in a non-judgmental environment. Wilton Library was the first non-academic library in Connecticut to receive permission from the Human Library Organization to host an event.
‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ - our 22 human books were community members who volunteered to share their stories in order to break down barriers based on age, race, sexual orientation, religion, ability, lifestyle choices, or other aspects of their identity. Book topics ranged from ageism to anorexia, from racism to surviving sexual assault, from being Christian to being Pagan, from defeating addiction to living with Alzheimer’s and much more.
INNOVATION DAY
Wilton Library’s Innovation Day, held October 21, 2017, was a hands-on community festival of building, tinkering and exploring. The day attracted more than 1,000 visitors who came together to enjoy high-tech and low-tech fun for all ages. The theme of “Discover, Dabble and Do-It-Yourself” encouraged patrons to participate in more than 40 crafting opportunities, workshops and presentations.
Patrons of all ages enjoyed “hovercraft” rides, green screen photos, an Oobleck Pool, spray tattoos, Zentangles and calligraphy. The Day also included wine tasting, floral design arranging, coaster tile making, emoji cookie decorating, henna tattoos, veggie-stamped bags, coloring, duct tape crafts, snap circuits, robotics, portrait painting and sculpture demos, a take apart table, GFI electrical circuits, LED light-up aprons, digital downloads instruction, tech help, popsicle catapults, HAM radio, as well as informational booths with Wilton’s Pollinator Pathways and Ridgefield Operation for Animal Rescue (ROAR).
COMING TOGETHER TO INSPIRE THE FUTURE
New this year and very popular among the crowd was the virtual reality with HTC Vive. Thanks to the Amadeo Family Fund, this new device enabled participants to visit virtual places and have adventures they may not otherwise be able to experience.
The community’s enthusiasm to learn new skills and try new technologies on Innovation Day was contagious among all ages. It was such a successful day in terms of showcasing the talent of the community, the resources of the library and the opportunities for continued enrichment at any age.
Many thanks to our many community partners and media sponsor Good Morning Wilton.
If you build it, they will come.” It turns out this statement is true, but not onlyfor baseball fields.

Our STEAM and STEM programming for youth is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Amadeo Family Fund.
LIGHTING UP THE FUTURE WITH STEAM PROGRAMS
Singularity Technology had a banner year -- they were the winning alliance team in three qualifying tournaments, received the Design Award as well as the Inspire Award, which is the highest award a FIRST robotics team can receive. The team also advanced to the State Competition and organized their own Destroy Your Hard Drive fundraiser to help defray costs.
The Children’s Library organized several successful STEAM and STEM initiatives for children up to grade 6. These included a Garden Club; programs with the Maritime Aquarium; ocean education and preservation; dinosaur programming; telescope know-how with the Discovery Museum; story time STEM; Tinkercad 3-D design and printing classes; and STEM sports, exploring the science behind soccer, basketball and mini golf.
The community maker movement is strong at Wilton Library, but perhaps the most inspiring is our Teen and Children’s departments. Here creative STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) programming offers the opportunity for our youth to explore new technologies, equipment and avenues of inspiration that might not otherwise be available to them.
This year, our teens experimented with rocketry, crime lab scenarios, homemade telescopes, LED lights, Tinkercad 3-D design, soldering and so many more skills as part of our STEAM programming. Clubs included Girls Who Code, RAKtivists, STEM for Middle Schoolers as well as our award-winning robotics team, Singularity Technology.
STEAM programming gives our young tinkerers a new kind of educational experience, one that combines first-hand learning with cutting-edge equipment and fosters a can-do attitude. This hands-on use of new technology in a group setting delivers a peek at future career opportunities as well as fosters cooperative learning skills.
CHILDREN & TEENS COME TOGETHER FOR STEAM
LET THE SUN SHINE IN: SOLAR ECLIPSE PARTYComing together at the Library to experience the astronomical event of the century.
The great American eclipse descended upon the United States on August 21, 2017, casting its shadow from coast to coast for the first time since 1918. It was one of the biggest astronomical events of the decade. Here in Wilton, the excitement, anticipation and -- most of all -- the hunt for eclipse glasses was intense. In response to the town’s fervor for the eclipse, we quickly brought together a community viewing party to showcase this important scientific as well as historical moment.
“It may have been only 70% eclipse,
but it was 100% fun that day!”
Hundreds lined up outside the library for the event, many carrying their own homemade viewers crafted from cereal boxes, brown cardboard boxes and other creative materials to help safely capture a view of the eclipse. There was a sense of people wanting to be with others to experience this spectacular event. The Eclipse Party offered sun-themed refreshments, crafts, pin hole viewing cameras, and a live feed from NASA of the full solar eclipse, shown on the big screen in the Brubeck Room. Both library courtyards were open for optimal viewing.
In total, more than 300 people showed up at the library for the family-friendly Eclipse Party -- it may have been only 70% eclipse but it was 100% fun that day! Friends, neighbors and other community members came out to be with others and graciously shared our limited supply of eclipse glasses and their superb Wilton spirit. A good time and good will was enjoyed by all. People met their neighbors, town acquaintances, as well as made new friends and came away with a shared sense of community and good neighborliness. It’s a fair statement to say the event eclipsed all expectations!

BRUBECK ROOM CONCERTSOur strong tradition of musical programming continued to be among our most well-attended events, drawing audiences from near and far.
Popular musical series included the Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room concerts, Connecticut’s Own performances and the Summer Music & More series. All filled the Brubeck Room with patrons appreciative of diverse musical offerings presented by local and world-class musicians.
We were honored to host Paquito D’Rivera, arguably the most famous Cuban-American jazz musician in the world, as part of our Hot & Cool jazz series. Winner of fourteen Grammy Awards in both jazz and classical categories, Mr. D’Rivera is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. His selection of Cuban and Latin compositions complemented our 2017 Wilton Reads selection, Carlos Eire’s Waiting for Snow in Havana.
Also as part of the Hot & Cool Jazz series, we welcomed 12-time Grammy Award-nominated pianist Fred Hersch back to a packed Brubeck Room. Proclaimed by Vanity Fair “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade,” Mr. Hersch
gave a stirring performance as well as read from his recent autobiography. The Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room series is funded by the William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks to Ed and Catherine Romer and Chris and Tish Brubeck.
For the 17th consecutive year, The Summer Music & More concert series gave patrons the opportunity to kick back indoors in the Brubeck Room or outdoors in the adjacent courtyard thanks to the ongoing sponsorship of the Village Market.
Our Connecticut’s Own concert series included performances by Madera Winds led by Ralph Kirmser and a chamber music concert featuring original music by composer and instrumentalist Joseph Russo. Additionally, world-renowned
violinist Igor Pikayzen performed with his piano accompanist Tatyana Pikayzen. The year rounded out with a popular concert by local favorite, pianist Joe Utterback, co-sponsored by Stay-at-Home-in-Wilton.
GRAMMY NOMINEES & JAZZ LEGENDS TO CLASSICAL GREATS & LOCAL FAVORITES
ART CONNECTS COMMUNITYArt brings people together. It creates joy, learning, beauty and dialogue. It opens us up to experiences other than our own and presents different perspectives. It draws individuals together even if they view the world in different ways. Art speaks a universal language that connects people with one another.
At Wilton Library, we are fortunate that our architectural spaces lend themselves to the study and display of art. Each month, the community gathers here to enjoy a vast array of artwork, encompassing diverse mediums, styles and subject matter. Local and regional artists and photographers of all ages share their works in ten inspiring main shows displayed in our front gallery and throughout the first floor.
Highlights this year included the Wilton Arts Council Focus ’17 photography show as well as the Wilton Schools’ Fine and Performing Arts Show, featuring artwork and musical performances by students in grades K through 12. The Summer Show showcased works of those who live or work in Wilton and drew a large crowd, appreciative of the talents of their friends and neighbors. We also served as the monthly exhibition and reception space for the Weir Farm Artist-in-Residency program.
It would not be possible for Wilton Library to offer this type of art enrichment to the community – both as viewers and as artists – without the volunteer stewardship of our art chairman Ed MacEwen. Our sincere thanks go to Ed and his team for their guidance, hard work and skill.
“I learn something new every time I come in.”

WILTON LIBRARY MINI GOLF SCORES A HOLE IN ONE!Beating the winter blues with creativity and a little friendly competition.
January in Wilton can be a bleak and dreary month. On Saturday, January 20, 2018, Wilton was nothing but green and fun-filled inside the library. On this day, Wilton Library held our first-ever family Mini Golf Fundraiser presented by Bankwell. Hundreds of golfers and onlookers putted, pitched and shouted “fore” throughout the stacks. Not a “shhh” was to be heard anywhere.
All ages from toddlers to grandparents watched and played on the 18-hole mini golf course. It was a day to putter around outside the house, joining with the community in support of the library.
Golfers had fun fending off hazards and hitting through ramps, tubes, barriers and other structures placed around the stacks. Each of the holes was decorated and sponsored by a local business or organization. The sponsors included: Au Pair in America, Bruce Bennett Nissan, Caraluzzi’s, Golf Performance Center, Granite Group Advisors, Higgins Group, Hoffman Landscapes, Kiwanis Club of Wilton, Lambert Orthodontics, Lang’s Pharmacy, The Pilates Advantage, Realty Seven, Rob Sanders Architects, Sola Salon Studios, Wilton Dental Associates, Wilton Family Eye Care, Wilton Hardware, and Wilton Meadows/The Greens at Cannondale.
In addition to mini golf, participants also supported the library through drawings for prizes, and thanks to Wilton Rotary, each golfer enjoyed a free hot dog with their $5 golfing ticket.
Apart from golf, participants also enjoyed a day of discovery throughout the library, exploring areas that they did not normally frequent. All in all, the day was a ‘hole’ lot of fun!
Many thanks to our title sponsor Bankwell; Club House sponsor, Silver Spring Country Club; and 19th Hole sponsor, Anytime Fitness; and to our media sponsors, Wilton Magazine and GOOD Morning Wilton.
