SDN and NFV are transforming networks
The virtualisation of IT has transformed the consumption of compute and storage and is extending to the network, within and beyond the data centre.

Colt Novitas A continuation of our next generation network strategy
Colt Novitas vision
Novitas vision is to enable network services to be used, provisioned, and orchestrated in real time, on-demand as is typical of cloud services in data centers, either through a portal or a set of APIs that enable further automation, and integrated with 3rd party networks.
Additionally, these network services will increasingly become cloud-centric workloads, being deployed on a set of common infrastructure.
9
This transformation will not only reduce costs, vendor dependencies and time to market, but will also increase the rate of innovation by making the network a platform on which to deliver future services based on software in an agile manner.

Colt Novitas is a major change programme
The transformation impacts all areas of the business and require:
• New operating models
• New commercial models and go-to-market
• Long term product and technology alignment
• Investments in new skills, platforms and technologies
12
Future Today
Hardware centric and very
technology driven
vendor-linked product
developments
Mainly manual processes
for service delivery, little
automation
Silo’d operations with a
mixture of static resource
management and limited
service management
Software centric, mixed
platforms (commodity &
vendor based), on-demand
commercial models
Continuous deployment of
new network functions &
automated delivery
Integrated, dynamic
operations with a focus on
customer self service and
management

Expected benefits
13
Elastic
Bandwidth Deliver programmable elastic links with
variable bandwidth.
Elastic
Topology Deliver programmable flexible topologies
based on overlay and underlay networks.
Elastic
Service Deliver virtualised off-net and on-net L2 and
L3 edge services on top of basic connectivity.
This will change the nature of today’s network:
Self-
provision
Near real-
time
Interworking
with other
providers

Supports
value added
services
Provides

Novitas roadmap – DCNetaaS
Phase 1 – October 2015
The first phase of Novitas include the release of DCNet as a Service, which provides customers with flexible, on-demand Ethernet services (on-net) across pre-wired data centres.
With DCNet as a Service, customers will be able to…
14
3. Modify in real time the
connection bandwidth
1. Reserve / release ports in
a selection of DC locations
2. Create / delete a connection
between user-reserved ports
Available as a component-based offering rather than a pre-determined solution, customers can build any network topology in near real-time by reserving ports and creating connections. It will initially support Point to Point services in over 50 locations and will continuously expand to more locations and service configurations.
Offered on a PAYG model, connections have a recurring charge based on the bandwidth consumed, rated per hour.

Novitas roadmap
Phase 2 and beyond…
Future phases focus on extending the reach of Ethernet services, supporting IP services and deploying software based network functions.
This includes releases of LANLink as a Service and Dedicated Cloud Access as a Service, which extend the reach of the Novitas platform to any customer MSP-connected site, enabling customers to create private connections across their various company sites, the available Cloud service providers, as well as the Data Centres and carrier hotels included in the DCNet as a Service offering.
Future phases will also include the automation of IP services such as a Hybrid VPN service with smart load balancing and NFV enabled services such as vCPE, Web security and Intrusion detection.
