the collective noun is taken assingular.

gReEn RuLeWhen the members of the collective noun are

taken as separate participants doing a

certain action individually the verb should be in itsplural form.

ExAmPlEsThe staff were pretty mad about the delay in their

salaries.The squad feel tired just by

thinking about running around the training camp all day.

mAgEnTa RuLeWhen a collective noun is

followed by a specification to the noun (an OF phrase), take the object of the prepositional

phrase as your noun, if it is countable take is as plural if it is uncountable then it is singular.

ExAmPlEsA pack of dogs are sniffing

around that tree.A swarm of bees is

buzzing about, I can hear it.

rEd RuLeWhen a collective noun is

preceded by a specification to the noun refer to the

specification for your verb, if it has the words EACH,

EVERY, EVERY ONE, ANY ONE, etc., it is singular.
