5 WAYS TO ELIMINATE 5 WAYS TO ELIMINATE STRESSSTRESS

2

What is the role of stress in the workplace?

One-fourth of employees view their jobs as the number one stressor in their lives.

-Northwestern National Life Three-fourths of employees believe the worker has

more on-the-job stress than a generation ago -Princeton Survey Research Associates Problems at work are more strongly associated with

health complaints than are any other life stressor-more so than even financial problems or family problems

-St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co

3

A Closer LoOK………. Musculoskeletal Disorders

On the basis of research by NIOSH and many other organizations, it is widely believed that job stress increases the risk for development of back and upper- extremity musculoskeletal disorders

-Encyclopaedia of Occupational Safety and Health

Up to 90% of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related complaints

WHAT IS STRESS??WHAT IS STRESS??

5

STRESS IS…..

The body’s response to an internal or external danger and the response of the body to the perceptionperception of that stimuli. - Dr. Knox

6

Epictetas – Greek Philosopher People are disturbed not by things,

but by their perception of things. -Epictetus

7

Can You Relate?

8

External v.s. Internal Stressors External stressors

include adverse physical conditions (e.g. pain, hot, cold) or stressful psychological environments (e.g. poor working condition).

Internal stressors can also be physical (e.g. infections) or psychological (e.g. intense worry about a harmful event that may or may not happen).

9

What are the affects of Stress?

10

Fight or Flight Response (HPA) system activated which

releases a steroid Cortisol Neurotransmitters (chemical

messengers) are released Adrenaline

All the body systems respond to the stimulus

11

Fight or Flight Response The Heart, Lungs, and Circulation system Response

The Mouth and Throat Response

The Skin’s Response Metabolic System Response

12

The Relaxation Response Once the threat

has passed and the effects has not been harmful, the stress hormones return to normal.

13

Guidelines for Reducing Stress Grant me the courage to change the

things I can change, the serenity to accept the things I can’t change, and the wisdom to know the difference.

-Reinhold Niebuhr

Deep Breathing Exercises Inhale through the nose

slowly and deeply to the count of ten

Make sure that the stomach and abdomen expand but the chest does not rise.

Exhale through the nose, slowly and completely, also to the count to ten.

Concentrate fully on breathing and counting.

Repeat 5 to 10 times and make a habit of doing it several times a day.

15

Muscle Relaxation After lying down in a comfortable position

without crossing the limbs, concentrate on each part of the body.

Maintain a slow, deep breathing pattern throughout this exercise

Tense each muscle as tightly as possible for the count of 5 to 10 and then release completely.

Experience muscle as totally relaxed and lead-heavy.

16

Meditation Sit upright with the spine straight,

either crossed-legged or siting in a chair with both feet on the floor, uncrossed.

With the eyes closed or gently looking a few feet ahead, observe the exhalation of the breath.

As the mind wanders, one simply notes it as a fact and return to the out breath. It may be helpful to imagine one’s thoughts as clouds dissipating away.

17

Massage Massage therapy appears to

slow down the heart and relax the body. Rather than causing drowsiness, however, massage actually increase alertness.

18

Chiropractic Spinal distortions

interfere with nerve function and are called subluxations.

When the spine becomes distorted or misaligned, the contents of the spinal canal are compressed, twisted, and stretched.

This action damages sensitive nerve fibers and interferes with their function of carrying impulses between the brain and the body.

19

Nerve Interference A major obstacle that

stands in the way of becoming healthier is interference in the nervous system caused by a subluxation.

Chiropractic assists the body in removing that interference.

By following our recommendations for your care, you have the potential to reach an optimal state of health and not just be symptom free.

20

Your Body Is A Chain Experts say that your body

forms a biomechanical chain.

This means that your spine doesn’t float in space, but is linked in a chain to all of the other parts of your skeleton above and below.

When one part of the chain is weak or out of alignment, it affects the strength of the entire chain.

For this reason chiropractic treats your body as a whole system and not just as its individual parts

21

Physical Causes of Subluxation Any physical activity may

lead to subluxation, including knocks, falls, car accidents, sports injuries, bending twisting lifting.

Sedentary or passive activities such as being seated at a desk, driving or working or even sleeping in an awkward position can cause subluxations.

22

Mental Causes of Subluxation Mental stresses that you do

not recover from may cause subluxations that persist in your body.

As a simple example, depressed people tend to look down which stresses the spine.

We even have language to reflect this such as “He has the weight of the world on his shoulders”, “My boss is getting on my back” or “My spouse is a pain in the neck”.

23

Chemical Causes of Subluxation

When the body cannot cope with its chemical load a subluxation can result.

Exposure to dust, fumes, liquids, smog, and any chemicals can cause stress on the body.

Foods and drugs (prescription or not) are also chemicals that interact with our bodies and may cause subluxations.
