What is Cited Reference Searching?

• Allows you to search for articles that have cited a specific published work

• Allows you to search the cited references (bibliography) of an article of interest

• Snowballing?!

Significance of cited reference searching

• Finding current research based on earlier research

• Finding how many times and where a publication is cited

• Identifying who is referencing a paper• How is a research topic being used to support

other research• Impact of literature on other research in the field• Keeping track of your own research• Used for tenure

Significance of cited reference searching

• Allows you to navigate forward and backward in time, discovering relationships between published works – Find new, unknown information based on older,

known information– Find relevant articles in areas where there is not a

large amount of literature

• Find “hidden connections” between research papers

• Trace the historical path of a research idea or discovery
