When to use citation searching?

When you want trace the history of a particular paper backward and forward in time

Backward: through the list of references after the paper (cited references)

Forward: through the subsequent citations (times cited)

Cited References (moving back in time)

Similar to looking in the bibliography of a printed book or journal

Finds details of the articles which are referenced by your original article

Times Cited (moving forward in time)

Finds works published since which have referenced your original article

Excellent for getting recent referencesRemember, if you start with a fairly recent

journal article, it may not yet have been cited many times

Sample search in WOS
