CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE
The Call Committee has finished the second interviews with the (2) potential candidates. We met on Monday February 19th to dis-cuss and review the two candidates. We compared the candi-dates strengths and weaknesses to our ministry site profile and through thoughtful prayer and a committee consensus we have a final recommendation for the Church Council. We have notified the Church Council and will meet with them to present our rec-ommendation. At this meeting the Call Committee will present the candidate to the Church Council and through ample dialogue and discernment the Council will be empowered to move forward with our candidate. Once there is a consensus on the candidate, nu-merous logistical items will have to be completed by the Council before the candidate can be named and a special congregation meeting can be scheduled. Again, with everything that has to fall into place, we anticipate having a potential pastor named by mid-March. The Council will make announcements before each ser-vice and updates will be posted in both the bulletins and the monthly newsletters. Please keep us in your prayers.

Repenting of Our Own Hypocrisy
I’m writing this on Ash Wednesday night, earlier in the month than I’d
usually do my column. Ash Wednesday arrived on Valentine’s Day
this year. Interesting juxtaposition of focus on love and focus on re-
pentance. It is the day that we start the journey of Lent -- time that
we reflect as individuals, and maybe as a society, on the sins of
which we need to repent. Isn’t that what love should be about –
being cleansed to truly love our God and our neighbor.
Yet, this evening as I watch the news, images of terror fill the screen.
Today marked not just the anniversary of one of the worst mass
shootings at an educational institution in this country – the 10th anni-
versary of the shooting at Northern Illinois University, but it is the day
that another mass shooting occurred an educational institution.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida joined
the growing list of schools with mass shootings – the 18th in 2018
and we are only 45 days into the year! Even though we swore after
Sandy Hook there would be a change, it has not come indicating a
need for repentance on a societal level. What is it about our nation
that this epidemic continues unabated?
The gospel for today calls us to look at how we walk as God’s peo-
ple. It calls for some serious self-analysis. But, we find it difficult to
do such critical self-analysis and consequently we continue to live in
denial. It becomes virtually impossible to see how we are similar to
those people who Jesus points to as hypocrites, how we often inter-
pret our beliefs in ways that make us incapable of seeing our own
arrogance. In my sermon this evening I talked about the need to
make the assumption that the hypocrite that Jesus is talking
aboutrepresents a good person with a sincere desire to worship God
correctly. I believe that will allow us to turn the spotlight on ourselves
and seriously look at the contradictions in our God following lives.
I know that I must turn the gaze upon myself and see how I measure
up to what God calls me to be. I must look at what I believe about
who God is in my life and see how that understanding shapes the
actions I take. I can’t just objectify others and analyze their behavior.
I must critically analyze my own against the measuring stick that God
provides. Then I must be honest with
myself and truly repent of that.
