The Hard Sign

Ъ

The hard sign indicates that the preceding consonant is hard.

Like the soft sign, the hard sign has no independent pronunciational value. It must be

paired with a consonant.

The hard sign indicates that the preceding consonant is hard.

Note on Pronunciation Pronounce ж with the tip of your tongue slightly curled

back and pointing to the top of your mouth. This sound is always hard.

Pronounce Х with your tongue in the same position in which you pronounce г and к.

Pronounce щ as a long ‘shh’ sound, as in ‘fresh sheets,’ with the tip of your tongue close to your lower front teeth.

Где?

To answer the question ГДЕ? (Where?) replace the -а at the end of a noun with -е. Example: Где ТоNня́? В шкоNле.

If there is a consonant at the end of the word, just add -e. Example: Где паNпа? В баNнке.

You must use the preposition в. Pronounce as part of the next word, and pronounce an unstressed e in this form as a weak i as in “it.” В ба�нке.
