Smoking – don’t get sucked in!!! Tobacco use among adults has declined

over 40% since 1965.

75% of adults DO NOT use tobacco

After a lawsuit in 1998, tobacco companies have agreed not to use cartoon characters and other methods that might attract children and teens.

Tobacco Addiction

VocabularyAddiction – a physical or psychological need

for a drug

Physical dependence – type of addiction in which the body itself feels a direct need for a drug

Psychological dependence – an addiction in which the mind sends the body a message that it needs more of a drug

You Can Quit! In 2000, 70% of teen smokers said they regretted

having started

44 million American adults are now former smokers

In order to quit, tobacco users have to go through withdrawal.

Withdrawal – physical and psychological symptoms that occur when someone stops using an addictive substance

Sidestream smoke contains twice as much tar and nicotine as mainstream smoke
