The baseline design ensures access into and
through Chamberlain Park is created and that
Waititiko (Meola Creek) is restored.
The baseline design has been created in consultation with a range of key stakeholders and community as well as taking into account key constraints and opportunities of Chamberlain Park such as landform, geology, access and transport as well as the demands of existing and new possible uses.

Improving the ecological integrity of Waititiko
(Meola Creek) presents an opportunity for
Auckland’s water quality and biodiversity.
HABITAT CREATIONThe location of Chamberlain Park provides an opportunity for habitat linkages to the rest of Waititiko, Meola Reef, Western Springs Park, Oakley Creek and Motu Manawa Pollen Island Marine Reserve. Habitat types which can be created and improved include the riparian corridor of Waititiko stream, creation of a wetland habitat and addition of lowland native forest vegetation.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTThere are a number of opportunities to engage the community in the restoration and ongoing management of Waititiko (Meola Creek). These include but may not be limited to:
• Community planting days• On site nursery• Community monitoring and reporting

Improving public access into and through
Chamberlain Park is part of the proposed
baseline design.
A network of shared paths, bush walks and informal recreation areas will help connect the surrounding community with Chamberlain Park .
Two new pathways create new links north to south through the site. One runs along the edge of Waititiko (Meola creek). The second along a ridgeline that runs through the east side of the park. These pathways will link the existing Northwestern Cycleway that runs along the northern edge of the park. A series of new bridges are proposed along the southern edge of the park to connect Parkdale Road, Norgrove Avenue & Norwood Reserve, Burnside Avenue and Rawalpindi Reserve with Chamberlain Park.
The existing bridges across Waititiko are proposed to be given a ‘face-lift’ to better relect the rich history of the site.
A future shared pedestrian and cycle bridge crossing the Northwestern Motorway linking Western Springs is highlighted as a long-term aspiration.

Cost Estimates for Community Access and Connectivity: $1.7 - $4.2 Million
Low cost estimate includes: The two ‘high priority’ bridges and assumes few complications with the implementation of the shared path.
High cost estimate includes: All four bridges crossing Waititiko / Meola Creek and higher quality gateway at Saint Lukes Road. It also assumes that there will be complications with the implementation of the shared path.
Cost estimate excludes: Restoration of Waititiko / Meola Creek and any additional works outlined in the Master Plan.
DISCLAIMER: All costs are estimates only and are made on the basis of the experience and
judgement of professional consultants familiar with the construction industry. These costs

COMMUNITY* - 3.8HaThe community area is focused at the area west of the Waititiko (Meola Creek). It is proposed for community use as well as Rawalpindi Reserve and the area north of the Northwestern Motorway.
• Chinese Centre• Existing playground moved from Rawalpindi Reserve to create
more diverse range of play environments.• Nature play / informal play• BBQ areas• Informal recreation area• Community garden• Existing off leash dog area maintained in Rawalpindi Reserve
THE FOLLOWING KEY POLICY PROJECTS WILL INFORM THE FINAL COMPONENTS OF THE REDESIGN OF CHAMBERLAIN PARK.• The Sports Facility Network Plan will identify and prioritise
sports facility needs across Auckland for the next twenty years. This plan will guide decision-making on the type of sports ields and support facilities which could be located at Chamberlain Park. It is expected that this project will be approved by the governing body in April 2016.
• Staff are investigating the provision of pool space in the western corridor to address potential gaps and to account for projected population growth. This will resolve the long-term future of the Mt. Albert Aquatic Centre as well as the need for, and location of, any new aquatic facilities. It is expected that the governing body will approve the long-term pool strategy in July 2016.
• Staff are investigating the long-term council ownership of golf courses across the region and the public/private provision of golf required to support changes in demand. This project will inform the proposed golf service offering for Chamberlain Park. It is expected that the governing body will approve the golf strategy in July 2016.
Costs Estimates for Scenario 4: $8.4 - $13.4 Million
Low cost estimate includes: Playground, BBQ area, multiuse sports ields, a car park, an area for informal recreation, reconiguration of golf course, a ‘low end’ driving range. The low cost also assumes few complications with the implementation of the multiuse sports ields, car park and driving range.
High cost estimate includes: Playground, BBQ area, multiuse sports ields, a car park, a complete redesign and reconiguration of a ‘high end’ golf course and driving range. The high cost also assumes complications with the implementation of the multiuse sports ields, car park and driving range.
Cost estimate excludes: Aquatic Centre, costs for Waititiko / Meola Creek restoration, shared paths and bridges and Chinese Centre.
DISCLAIMER: All costs are estimates only and are made on the basis of the experience and
judgement of professional consultants familiar with the construction industry. These costs
therefore cannot be guaranteed until more detailed investigations are undertaken.
