Two-pronged strategy:
1. Untargeted approach: Identify genetically diverse wild material and introduce diversity into the breeding program
2. Targeted approach: Identify beneficial traits and introduce them into the breeding program
Wild chickpea populations in the field
• Developed 30 F2 populations of wild chickpea x domestic cultivars
• Phenotyped for growth habit, flowering time, time to pod set and vigour in 2018 and 2019
• Post harvest phenotyped for seed shape, colour and size, yield
• F2 populations genotyped using DArTseq
• Made selections with the PBA chickpea breeder in 2018
• 2019 trials in Shenton Park (WA), Mingenew (WA) and Breeza (NSW)
