Gymnastics News
This term in Kindergym we've found the green sheep,
rescued puppies with Dora, and were super heroes
flying around the gym!
Our tots are working on their balance on the high
beam, their grip strength swinging on the bar, and their
jumping on different types of trampoline and boards.
If you have a three year old that's ready to be more
independent and step away from mum Tots Plus is the
class for you! While we do the same circuit as the Gym
Tots class our Tots Plus class gets kids ready for Mini
Gym once they turn 4. Instead of going around the
circuit with your little one, you stay at one station and help the kids go around.
If you're interested, ask your Kindergym coach for more details. Our big kid Mini Gymers
have started working on backwards rolls, handstands and bunny hops for our cartwheels.

Wow it’s September already!!
Term 3 is nearly behind us with
Term 4 just around the Corner.
We’ve had some real highs at
Y-West over the past few
months – HUGE CONGRATS
to our wonderful Gymnasts
who took part at the YMCA
Brisbane Sherelle Graham
Challenge. This Challenge is
very important to us at Y-West as it’s named after our very
own Sherelle Graham who steered the Gymnastics Program
for 30 something years. Well Done Y-West gymnast you
made us proud!

PrYme Movers Launch
We have just completed our second 12 week
Cancer Survivor Program with great results
amongst the participants.
Many improved their cardiovascular fitness,
strength, flexibility and overall health over the
course of the program and will now enter our
phase two program.
Our phase two program is an ongoing mem-
bership which gives our Cancer Survivor Pro-
gram graduates the opportunity to continue
to train as a group as they return to health.
Our latest 12 week Cancer Survivor Program started on Monday August 28 and we are
looking for more participants! This program is free for anyone who is currently or has in the
past experienced cancer.
Training sessions are at 10am on Monday and Thursday mornings. These sessions include a
mix of cardio, strength and flexibility training and are designed so that participants can work
at a pace that is comfortable for them.
Please contact the centre if you would like more information or to sign up!

YMCA Sherelle Graham Challenge 2017
Adult Gymnastics Classes at Y-West
We would like to thanks all clubs participating in the 3rd YMCA Sherelle Graham Challenge
carried out last weekend at Y-West. This is an event aimed to promote team spirit, celebrate
participation in the sport and highlight the YMCA Values. This is a YMCA Inter-Club Competi-
tion.
Bowen Hills, Acacia Ridge, Caloundra, Victoria Point and Stafford were the YMCA clubs pre-
sent in this competition bringing together around 200 gymnasts.
All gymnasts had a great time not only competing but sharing their skills with the YMCA gym-
nastics family.
Y-West proudly took the cup once again with great results in both MAG and WAG disciplines
(Results can be found on our website and on the gymnastics hall printed)
Our PrYme Movers program kicked off for our community members who are 50 and over.
Health and wellbeing is very important as we move into our retirement years and YMCA is
passionate about providing health and fitness to all ages, including our over 50’s. We have 6
dedicated classes per week for our PrYme Movers Community. Thank you to Barbara Marks
who is driving the program and for all the work she has put in, this includes taking a trip down
to our YMCA Manningham Centre in Victoria to view their PrYme Movers program that has 44
classes per week which are dedicated to their Senior Community.
We are very excited for our 2nd Annual Food Fiesta coming up on Saturday 28th October.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 for our Cancer Survivor Program. We almost all have a loved one
who is fighting or surviving Cancer. At YMCA we are helping those who have crossed paths
with Cancer both Physically and Mentally with our FREE Cancer Survivor Program. Our Fiesta
will have live entertainment on stage from 3pm to 9pm, we will also have in our Gymnastics
Hall a Disco for $5 per child – children over the age of 7 are able to be left for an hour and a
half supervised, so mum and dad can go an enjoy the fiesta kid free. Being that it’s Hallow-
een we will also have a Halloween Hub that will have Face Painting (only $2) and Sand Art ($5
per child) for all kids to enjoy. All monies raised will go towards providing special equipment
for our survivors and to help us offer survivors Health and Wellbeing at no cost to them. We
will also have lots of yummy food stalls from all over the world.
From the 3 October we will be running a raffle to be drawn at our Fiesta towards our $10,000
goal. 1st Price will be $1000 for 2018 Recreational Programs (Dance, Gymnastics, Limited
Hours Care, Playschool and Judo), we also will have other prizes like family pass to Australia
Zoo, Family pass to Aussie World, Family Photo shoot by Alive and Clicking Photography to
the value of $600, one term of Recreational Program fees (to the value of $200). We will be
sending out a book of tickets to all our families, please help support our program.
Spreading is Caring is back!! We are asking for donations of Strawberry Jam, Honey and
Cornflakes for our YMCA School Breakfast program, we have been providing our SE QLD
Kids with breakfast – their most important meal of the day since 2006. We have a table at
reception for your donations.
During the last year, Y-West has been delivering gymnastics programs to the local communi-
ty through the Sporting Schools programs. Students from different schools such a Brisbane
Independent School, Australian Islamic College and the Good news school have enjoyed
gymnastics as a part of their sport education classes at the school. More than 230 students
between 4 to 16 years old have been beneficed with Y-West programs through around 30
gymnastics sessions at the school.
Y-West is a registered provider of the Sporting Schools program, an initiative of the Australi-
an Sports Commission. We are proudly committed with bring the sport to the community.
Gymnastics, a sport for everyone!
We are very proud here at Jamboree Heights to have started the PrYme Movers program.
The classes are designed for participants 50 years and over. As a large percentage of
members at YMCA are in this age bracket and we feel we can offer a specific type of fitness
and training in a safe, friendly and motivational environment.
Our classes are designed to suit a range of fitness levels and incorporate strength, cardio,
and flexibility, balance with benefits of bone strengthening. The program is designed to
reduce risks of many conditions such as osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, dementia to
name but a few.
We have had a good response on our launch week with many members coming to our sam-
ple classes. We also had 2 seminars. On Monday it was on benefits of exercise, followed
by morning tea. The other on Wednesday was on bone health.
We hope you can come along and join us soon. Some classes will be in the group fitness
room, and others upstairs in the main gym area. We will include social outings on a regular
basis with some exercise component and food of course!
See reception for details on PrYme Movers or have a chat with myself or Travis at the gym.
Look forward to moving with you soon!!

gymnastics and as the weather heats up there will be lots of water play! Towards the end of
the term we will prepare for our annual Christmas concert which will see us performing songs

KIDS ART GALLERY
September is here and it has been a busy term, we had so much to do!
Pre-Kindy have had a wonderful term investigating story books, building friendships, creating
artwork and engaging in dramatic play. We have also been learning new moves in our Dance
lessons with Sarah and building on our strength and co-ordination in our Jumping Joeys
Gymnastics classes with Maike! In these last two weeks of term we will be finishing off our
literacy rich unit with ‘STOP, Elephant, Stop’ by Andrea Shavick and ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’
by Jimmy Kennedy. In week 9 we had superhero activities in our Gymnastics lesson and then
finished off the term in week 10 with a Teddy bears picnic party lunch. Class photos also were
taken in the last week of term to document the wonderful year we have had!
We have had a busy couple of months preparing for some
of our performances. Most of our classes performed at the
Jindalee State School Fete a couple of weeks ago. This
was our second performance this year and the students
did an amazing job. It was wonderful to see how much they
had improved on stage since our last performance earlier
in the year. Our next performance will be our end of year
concert which will probably be at the end of November. We
are still seeking a venue so if anyone knows of a great local
auditorium or school hall please let us know.
Our next holiday workshop will be on the 18th-21st of Sep-
tember and we are looking forward to meeting lots of new dancers and seeing many familiar
faces. We have organised a variety of themed dance days such as street styles, Broadway
and circus skills. It will be a lot of fun!
