Basic Skin Care

Beautiful skin is determined by the healthy structure and proper function of components within the skin. To maintain beautiful skin and slow the rate at which it ages, the skin must be supplemented and protected.

Free Radicals and Antioxidants

Free radicals are unstable, highly reactive molecules that damage the skin, leading to side effects associated with skin aging, such as lines and wrinkles, dullness and sagging.

Antioxidants are nature’s defense against the damaging effects of free radicals, guarding cellular structures and DNA against aging free radicals.

The Antioxidant Network

Antioxidants work optimally as a network to protect cellular health and viability. Carotenoids are known as “blotters” and provide the first line of defense by absorbing a large part of the free radicals’ load.

In addition to carotenoids, the powerful “redox” (regenerating) antioxidants CoQ10 and vitamins C and E play a significant role in the antioxidant network.

Introduction

Introduction

Scientists understand that free radicals are the root cause of aging. They damage cell structures, compromising the skin’s ability to function optimally. Fighting free radicals and repairing past damage is an essential part of preventing skin aging and maintaining a youthful appearance.

Skin requires adequate amounts of cellular energy to continue the fight against aging. For this reason, many cosmetic companies have developed products containing the powerful anti-aging ingredient CoQ10.

Introduction

In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, CoQ10 can also act as a coenzyme* in cellular energy production, which is essential for healthy, youthful looking skin.

Unfortunately, many CoQ10-containing products on the market today do not take advantage of the full potential of CoQ10.

*What is a coenzyme?A nonprotein organic substance---usually a vitamin or mineral—that combines with a specific protein to form an active enzyme.

Nu Skin® Celltrex® CoQ10 Complete

Based on the scientific studies conducted by Dr. Lester Packer, the world’s foremost antioxidant research scientist, Nu Skin has developed a product that protects and promotes energy production while harnessing the full power of CoQ10.

Celltrex® CoQ10 Complete

Celltrex® CoQ10 Complete promotes cellular energy production, allowing your skin to rebound beautifully from daily oxidative stress for a radiant, youthful appearance. Only this patent pending serum combines coenzyme Q10 with a protective antioxidant network of colorless carotenoids and vitamins C and E for optimal CoQ10 bioactivity.

Vitamin E

• Vitamins E and C—vitamin E protects healthy cell membranes from oxidative free radical damage. Vitamin C works synergistically with vitamin E to quench free radicals and also works to regenerate vitamin E. Like CoQ10, vitamins E and C function best in a complete antioxidant network.

Key Benefits and IngredientsSupported

Key Benefit Supported

a) Promotes essential cellular energy production for a radiant, youthful appearance.

Highly concentrated within the cell’s energy-generating mitochondria, CoQ10 plays an important role as a coenzyme in generating cellular energy. Fortified with a reserve of energy, cells are able to more efficiently protect against the environmental stress that dulls the skin and leads to aging. With adequate energy to fight free radicals and their aging effects, the skin has a more radiant, youthful appearance.

Key Benefit Supportedb) Supplies an exclusive combination of colorless carotenoids and

vitamins C and E for a complete antioxidant network of protection against skin-damaging free radicals.

CoQ10 functions as either an energy coenzyme or, if other antioxidants are unavailable, as a free radical fighter. Ideally, CoQ10 will function as an energy coenzyme. When CoQ10 is protected by a complete antioxidant network, it will be available to generate energy and promote healthy looking, more vibrant skin. Celltrex® CoQ10 Complete is specifically formulated with vitamins C and E to help provide a complete and protective antioxidant network for maximum cellular energy.

Key Benefit Supported

c) Enhances CoQ10 bioactivity for a healthier, more youthful appearance.

When CoQ10 is protected by a complete antioxidant network, including colorless carotenoids with vitamins C and E, it is free to function as an energy coenzyme. Cells are provided with a reserve of energy to quench free radicals and repair oxidative damage. This abundance of energy results in a healthier, more youthful appearance as cellular processes function at ideal levels.

Key Benefit Supported

d) Provides a daily antidote to the signs of aging by increasing energy levels within the skin.

Scientists understand that the oxidative damage caused by free radicals breaks down key cellular components. This breakdown results in the decline of vital protective processes, including the cell’s ability to generate endogenous antioxidants and internal cellular repair. CoQ10 is necessary to help generate the cellular energy required to create and protect the proteins responsible for the appearance of youthful skin.

Scientific StudiesThe ability of colorless carotenoids to protect the energy producing potential of CoQ10 was investigated in two separate studies conducted by a third-party laboratory.

Study 1: Conducted on fibroblast cells in vitro. Results are summarized in the following two slides.

Study 2: Focuses on the ability of colorless carotenoids to protect CoQ10 availability when exposed to the positively charged ion (anion) potassium hydroxide (KOH). This ion can have the same oxidative effects as free radicals on CoQ10 and mitochondria. Results are summarized in the slides following Study 1.

Study 1: Synergistic Effects of CoQ10 and Colorless Carotenoids on Cellular Stress in Fibroblasts

The first bar (Control Group) represents human fibroblasts not stressed with interleukin-1 (IL-1), a pro-inflammatory cytokine.

The second bar (No Treatment) represents human fibroblasts stressed with IL-1, but left unprotected by CoQ10 or colorless carotenoids.

The third bar (CoQ10) represents human fibroblasts stressed with IL-1 and protected by CoQ10.

The fourth bar (Colorless Carotenoids) represents human fibroblasts stressed with IL-1 and protected by colorless carotenoids.

The fifth bar (CoQ10 and Colorless Carotenoids) represents human fibroblasts stressed with IL-1 and protected by both CoQ10 and colorless carotenoids.

CONCLUSIONSThe results suggest that a combination of CoQ10 and colorless carotenoids is more effective in reducing the effects of cellular stress (often caused by UV radiation and environmental pollutants) than either one alone. Carotenoids alone inhibited cellular stress indicators by 47 percent; however, the combination of CoQ10 and colorless carotenoids showed almost a 70 percent inhibition in cellular stress indicators.

Study 1: Synergistic Effects of CoQ10 and Colorless Carotenoids on Cellular Stress in Fibroblasts

The chart to the left shows the effect of potassium hydroxide (KOH), a strong base that oxidatively degrades the bioavailability of CoQ10, with and without the protection of colorless carotenoids.

The first bar (Control) represents the base bioavailability of CoQ10.

The second bar (KOH) represents the bioavailability of CoQ10 in the presence of KOH, an oxidative agent.

The third bar (Carotenoids and KOH) represents the bioavailability of CoQ10 in the presence of KOH and colorless carotenoids.
