CEIP Ramon Macip - Dolors Granés

Nowadays Carnival is a popular and playful festival. It is celebrated the week before Lent. The dates of this festival depends on the moon. For this reason Carnival can start between 29th of January

and 4th of March and can end between 4th of February and 10th of March.

Carnival is related to Christian tradition. Lent is a time of sacrifice and people can’t eat a lot;

Carnival represents freedom and a time to break rules (to take advantage of this week to do what

people won’t be able to do later).

Historically, two characters represent the fight between Carnival and Lent. The king of Carnival is a

crazy person. His enemy, the old Lent, is an old woman with 7 legs, who fast and is vegetarian.

Each year, the king of the Carnival reads an opening speech and then Carnival starts.

In his opening speech, the king gives people permission to have fun without restrictions: it’s the

time to dance and fancy dress parade. But chaos and madness only last a week. The last day of Carnival

people realize that so much disorder isn’t good.In a public trial, the king is found guilty of all chaos

and he’s condemned to death. After reading his will, he’s burnt in public.

In Carnival children have fun following the King of the Carnival’s instructions and putting on fancy dress, such as Spiderman, Batman, a

chinese, a demon, a doctor, a nun, a witch, a princess, a baby, etc.

The king of the Carnival went to our school the 5th of February and gave the children the following instructions:

Monday, 8th of February: To come to school wearing beach clothes.

Tuesday, 9th of February: To come to school with a funny hairstyle.

Wednesday, 10th of February: To come to school looking very smart.

Thursday, 11th of February : To come to school painted such an animal.

Carnival is also celebrated in our village. Many people and children were dressed with fancy costumes for all the streets on the 14th of

February.

Some people were dressed in a common theme (vikings, cowboys, clowns, …) but others in a specific item.

Here we can see a little show…

Hope you enjoyed it
