• Students must demonstrate mastery of
explicit competencies to receive credit
• Students receive constant support
based on their individual learning needs
• Learning, not time, is the determining

The Goal
• A Business Transfer Degree– Competency based
– Completely online
– Openly licensed (CC BY)
– Six-month term with multiple start dates
– Full time equivalent tuition ($2667 plus fees)
– Students work at their own pace, completing as
many credits as they are able during each term

Curriculum Development
• System faculty will specify the
competencies for each course, with
process facilitation from Lumen
Learning
• The competencies will match the
expected content of the existing transfer
course, and the course will appear on
the student’s transcript as the regular
five-credit course

public review and comment period, after
which system faculty will address
comments and concerns in the
competency documents with process

Final Assessments
• The teaching faculty who are hired to
teach the courses will develop the final,
summative assessments for the
competencies and finalize the courses,

• The teaching faculty will administer the
final assessments and assign the grade
Final Assessments
• Include all competencies identified for
the course
• Are project- or performance-based
• Administered when student is ready
• Student grades = A (4.0) or B (3.0)
• Other grades per college policies
(Incomplete, Failure, etc.)
Teaching
• The teaching faculty will interact directly
with students using elearning tools
(Canvas, Collaborate, Panopto, etc.)
• The competency-based and adaptive
features of the courses will use an
elearning tool called Candela Mastery,
which will be integrated into Canvas
Student Completion
• Students will have a competency
dashboard for each course that shows
the required competencies and the
student’s progress toward each one
• The teaching faculty and completion
coaches will work together to assist
students and to keep them on track to
completion
License and Review
• All competencies and course content
will be openly licensed (Creative
Commons Attribution 4.0 or later)
• Regular updates and improvements will
be made to the curriculum based on a
range of empirical data
