Campaign to Save the Wedgwood Museum
The Campaign:
Tom and Alison Wedgwood are at the hub of the campaign and are working with the Members of
Parliament for Stoke Central and Stoke South, Hon. Dr Tristram Hunt MP and Rob Flello MP
respectively.
Other politicians who are concerned about the situation include:
The Rt. Hon. The Earl of Shrewsbury and Waterford, Conservative Member of the House of
Lords.
The Rt. Hon. The Earl of Clancarty, Cross-Bench Peer, Artist, freelance writer and translator.
Lord Waldegrave of North Hill. PC. Former Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Provost of Eton.
“The best outcome is for the Government to say that this is one of those cases where we have to
say "yes". In five or ten years no one will say: "They were mad to spend £14 million on saving
the Wedgwood Museum". What we will say, I assure you, Danny Alexander, will be: "Thank
goodness the Chief Secretary of the day had the good sense to do it."
Rt. Hon. Sir Menzies Campbell (MP for North East Fife) “It can hardly have been the intention
of the statutory protection offered by the act that charities like the museum should find themselves
in such circumstances…”
Rt. Hon. Sir Malcolm Rifkind (MP for Kensington and Chelsea)
Christopher, Lord Smith of Finsbury (Former Minister for Culture) “I will very happily sign up to
the petition".
Glenda Jackson (MP for Hampstead and Kilburn)
Oliver Heald (MP for North East Hertfordshire)
Sir Patrick Cormack (former MP for South Staffs) “an act of wanton vandalism to disperse it.”
Jeremy LeFroy (MP for Stafford)
Bill Cash, (MP for Stone)
Julian Huppert (MP for Cambridge)
Rory Stewart (MP for Penrith and The Border) 'to lose the contents would be a great travesty'
Dave Anderson (MP for Blaydon)
Lord Flight of Worcester, Former Member of Parliament
Cllr. Amyas Stafford-Northcote (Leader of the Stafford Conservative Party)
Some supporters of the Campaign:
Sir Neil Cossons OBE FSA FMA, Pro-Provost and Chairman of the Royal College of Art. Director,
Science Museum, 1986–2000; Chairman, English Heritage, 2000–07. “If the court case goes against the
museum it will not only be catastrophic for one of the finest museums in the country but blow a hole
through all our assumptions about the inalienability of collections held by trusts.”
The Earl of Gowrie. PC. Former Minister for the Arts. Former Chairman of the Arts Council.
The Duke of Somerset. DL
The Duchess of Somerset
Philip Darwin, Former Senior Partner Laurence Prust and Co., Stockbrokers. Descendant of Charles
Darwin and Josiah Wedgwood.
