Group- Metals, Nonmetals, Metalloids?Beryllium is a
metalFound in group 2It is Alkali-Earth
Metal
HistoryDiscovered by Louis-Nicholas Vauquelin in
1798Etymological origin of name: Greek: beryllos,
berylElement symbol comes from the first two
letters of the element!
Compounds Where it Commonly ExistsOne compound is
Beryllium dihydride (BeH2). It appers as a solid ,and it is white. It’s density is 650 kg m-3.
Another compound is Beryllium Oxide (BeO3). It is a crystalline solid. It’s density is 3010 kg m-3.
Beryllium Oxide
UsesBeryllium, unlike other metals, is virtually
transparent to x-rays. So, it is used in radiation windows for x-ray tubes.
Beryllium alloys are also used for aircraft, satellites and spacecraft because they require light-weight materials.
Another use of Beryllium is that it used in nuclear reactors.
Found Beryllium is not
found pure in nature, but beryllium compounds can be found in different mineral rocks, soil, coal, oil, and volcanic dust.
Where is it found?Can be
found almost anywhere in the world, but it is not found in its pure form. Found in Emeralds and other gems. It is natural.
Physical PropertiesMelting Point- 1278°C (2,349°F) Highest melting point of the light metalsBoiling Point- 2,500°C (4,500°F)Density-1.8 grams per cubic centimeter High heat capacity and high heat
conductivity
State of MatterAt room temperature,
Beryllium is found as a
solidsolid
Chemical Properties Beryllium reacts with acids.Beryllium also reacts with different halogens.Beryllium does not react with water or steam.
Additional FactsBeryllium can be extremely harmful to your
health when breathed in. Beryllium salts are very toxic.
