EvacuationEvacuation Evacuation was when children were moved to a different part of the country. They were moved because of the bombing in towns and cities. When the children

were Evacuated they took:

•A gas mask

• A sandwich from their mother

• A paper bag containing

Spare changes of underwear and night clothes

The children went to school in the morning then marched in long lines to the train or bus station were they were sent to the country

Q1. When and what was the phoney war?

The phoney war was at the start of the war when Britain

thought that the war was never going to start. It started in

September 1939 till April 1940.They stopped carrying there

gassy masks and some evacuees went home. This process lasted for six

month’s but soon the German forces attacked,

Denmark and Norway and then they attacked Britain. This became the Phoney war.

The blitz was when the German forces suddenly attacked

1940 till may 1941.

During the war, everyone had to cover their windows and doors at night with heavy blackout curtains, cardboard or paint. They needed to prevent any glimmer of light from escaping and aiding enemy aircraft during their bombing raids.

Street lights were switched off or dimmed and shielded to deflect their light downward. Traffic lights and vehicle headlights were fitted with slotted covers to deflect their beam down to the ground. Thousands of people died in road accidents.

Why was it needed?Rationing was when Britain were getting food, petrol an from other countries, but GermanyCut of the food that was travelling to Britain by bombing the cargo ships which carried the food.

given a ration book to keep track of all the food and other goods that

D-DayD-Day

The 'D' in D-Day does not stand for anything, it's a just a name the

military use when planning an event. The military started planning the

details of the invasion before they knew the date when it would take

place. In order to organise things like when the troop ships should leave

England they referred to it as D-Day.

D-day was a battle to liberate the French from the Germans.

The British had help from the Canadian and the Americans.

D-Day started on the 6th June 1944.

There were five main landing beaches:

The aftermath of D-DayThe aftermath of D-DayThe after math of d-day was when the British, American and Canadian troops liberated France from German occupation, France celebrated on the streets this was called VE-Day. They liberated France on the 25th of August 1944. The allied troops marched the German troops out of France and into Germany. It took around ten weeks to liberate Paris.
